Campbell Armstrong has produced yet another dark masterpiece following the troubled life of Perleman, his Glasgow detective. It is impossible to remain unmoved by the passionately observed inhabitants and victims of this gripping tale, as they move across the glittering canvas of a great city. One desperately wants Perleman to succeed against all odds! Armstrong is a fabulous storyteller. His Perleman beats Taggart and Rebus into a dismal pulp - programme-makers take note!

As someone brought up in Glasgow, I can often spot a crime novelist who picks the city for a location just because it "seems" dangerous, but doesn't the first thing about of the place. Although this is my first Campbell Armstrong, you can tell he has a real feel for its gritty underworld. The characters are well-drawn, the city grim, the plot slick. I won't give too much of the story away (I'm sure there'll be plenty of others willing to do it), but this is a fast-paced thriller, with a great eye for detail (severed hands, anyone?), and a dark look at the human psyche: one hell of a read.

A great and somewhat grisly story with some wonderful language and insights as Armstrong takes us into the belly of Glasgow. From start to finish the book had me hooked - hard to get bored with a story without slow moments.
If there is a disappointment, it would be that there could have been more closure on some issues. This reads "sequel" to me and if the standard can be maintained we will be enjoying another good read in the not too distant future.
