′...allows men to indulge their sweet tooth without compromising their masculinity′ (Culinaria Libris, February 2013)

From the Back Cover

This is NOT your mother′s cupcake cookbook BUTCH BAKERY does cupcakes like nobody else. There are no pretty sparkles, delicate flowers, pastel colors, or cutesy designs here. Instead, you′ll find big flavors and favorite ingredients used in bold new combinations for seriously delicious results. These grown–up desserts are packed with hardy flavors like bacon, rum, espresso, and cayenne pepper. The potent B–52 is imbued with Baileys Irish Cream and Kahlúa; the Really Hot Dog is a devil′s food cupcake made diabolical with a dose of hot chili powder; and the Old–Fashioned is infused with whiskey and Angostura bitters. If you want truly amazing desserts that break the mold and excite the taste buds, The Butch Bakery Cookbook delivers cupcakes made with dude–inspired flavors and ingredients.

I first discovered the Butch Bakery after their web-site full of manly cupcakes went viral and featured in a very well-known blog for new and innovative product ideas. My only disappointment was that the bakery is in New York City meaning the 'Jackhammer' and 'B-52' flavours could be nothing more than a transatlantic craving.

Imagine my delight when I found out they were to put the butch buttercream recipes into a new book - I had it on pre-order without delay. After months of waiting, it has finally arrived, and it doesn't disappoint!

My first surprise was the size of the book - hard-backed and 192 pages in all. The Butch Bakery started out with just 12 cupcake flavours, but the book contains a massive 31 unique ideas with options to customize producing endless combinations.

The book begins with cupcake bootcamp, everything the budding butch baker needs to engineer dude-inspired flavours from toolbox to supply cabinet. The instructions are simple and precise, follow them and you can't go wrong.

Now for a few warnings to those of you outside of the USA. I can't let these issues affect my review score, because at the end of the day the Butch Bakery is a New York company and the book is an American publication. But the book is on general sale in the UK so it would have been nice for a special edition taking these issues into consideration.

Firstly, the recipes use cup measures. These are American cup measures being a measure of 8 fluid ounces. Cup measures in the UK can be anything from 6-10 fluid ounces, so be sure you have a quality set of American cup measures on hand if you're going to follow the recipes without having to modify or convert them.

Secondly is the flour.

I was very excited to see that Butch Bakery would be doing a cookery book after being linked to their website and hooked in by the use of different alcohols and flavour combinations you don't usually get in a traditional cupcake shop. This book doesn't disappoint with lots of delicious sounding recipes that I can't wait to try. I have a very large collection of predominantly baking themed cookery books and this one really does stand out.

The photos and overall book design are great, as is the wording - I love the very manly cake toppings such as 'ginger sawdust' and chocolate discs printed with an edible camouflage pattern (search online for chocolate transfer sheets, they are very easy to use).

As the previous reviewer said our 'all-purpose' plain flour doesn't have as much gluten in as the US's does, but you could easily use '00' flour as it has the higher gluten content - this can now be bought in many supermarkets and in pretty much all Italian food shops. Don't use bread flour though, that has far too much!

As for cake flour mentioned in several recipes, this is very very hard to find in the UK. There is however a remedy to this - just make your own! For every cup of cake flour needed measure out a cup of plain or 00, then remove 2 tbsp and replace them with 2 tbsp of cornflour. Seive them together and there you have it - homemade cake flour.

Most of the US ingredients that are in the recipes can be bought online from American candy shops, or a lot of the time with some of the more unusual alcohols there is a UK equivalent such as apple brandy.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone craving a less twee sweet treat - if you have so far avoided the bacon cake craze, do yourself a favour and try out the recipe in this book, you will not be disappointed!!!

Men like cakes as well!! Just not with pink sparkly icing and wafer flowers all over them. This book bridges that gap really well. It gives the guys a great little reference book for baking as well as a collection of seriously manly (read boozy) recipies.

Arrick goes through lots of basics in the begining - 'Boot Camp' and also includes an equipment 'Supply List'. The wording is slightly different to a regular cook book, it's been 'maned up' for example, we have the 'Ingredient Roster' 'Plan of Attack' and 'Construction'. He also includes 'Butch's Baking Lesson' at the end of some recipies - 'Theres a reason theres a recipie - so follow it!'.

The recipies are well laid out with nice clear photog's which look great and give a good general guide to how cupcakes should look and be presented in a 'guy style'. There are recipies that use booze (quite alot actually) coffee and bacon - but all sound delicious and are thoroughly adaptable (So leave the booze out if need be). Yes it is a bit 'Americanised' (Duh - its an American book) but the only issue I thought I might encounter is with the need to have an 'Egg Replacer' but you can get cartons of egg whites in most supermarkets nowadays - if not just use egg whites as normal. If there is anything you are not sure about - Googe it.

The chapters are as follows - Working / Play Ball / Touchdown / Barbecue Season / Couples night Out / Butch's On-The-Go (This last chapter uses pre-prepared cake mixes - which is genius).
