Hi, my name is Jared and I am four. My sisters and I love Sandra Boynton and But Not The Hippopotamus is our favorite. We could read the book to mom when we were two. We even showed it to our cousins and they loved it too. *jared

This is one of my favorite books to read to my son now 11 months. The ryming flow of the story gives this book it's good rythm. The author does a good job of keeping the story simple with a nice ryming flow that is not over done. It holds the adults attention as well as the childs. There are just enough words per page as my son looks at the pictures and turns the pages while I am reading to him.
I have the board book and highly recommend this type of book. It encouranges interaction from the child allowing them to turn the pages and look at the pictures without tearing the pages. I have found that my son is quite interested most of Boynton's books. I have read to him from a very early age and he will often pick up her books and page through them and bring them over to me to read them to him.
Boynton's books were recommended to me at a hospital sponsored child education class and I highly recommend them to you. They make great gifts.

This wonderful story book has colorful pictures, exciting rhymes, and sturdy pages for the very young child. In addition, it has a deeper theme for slightly older children. Adults reading to the child can use the situation of the hippopotamus to aply to socialization issues a child may be facing. Sandra Boynton's characters are charming, and her humor transcends the generations.

What a wonderful story! I never thought that my almost 2-year old would say "hippopotomus" and "armadillo" but he does! And when the hippo joins in, he puts his arms in the air and yells "But YES, the hippopotomus," then saddens slightly as we finish with, "But not the armadillo." It's definetely a five-star book.

Having read this book as a child, I had always wondered what had happened to my copy, until recently when I visited my sister & nephew, whereapon I found that my sister had taken the book when she left home some 9 years ago. That evening I was delighted to find that Amazon had my favourite childhood book for sale, so now, my nephew has a copy, and I'm sure he will read & enjoy this book for many years as his mum & I both did & still do despite our supposed "adult" status and I have a brand new copy to enjoy all over again. I love this book!!

Not your typical board book that's more of a bored book. Funny plot and ending. Great drawings if you like her style, and my daughter loves the colors.

We now have several Sandra Boynton books. This one is my favourite. The tempo is lively, the rhymes are great (who else could have thought of something to ryhme with "Hippopotamus"???), the picture are adorable and we all chorus "But Not the Hippopotamus!" together.

I note that someone rated this book low because they didn't like the idea of someone being left out. Good grief! It's not real! It's a children's book!

This is the first Sandra Boynton book I came across, about 20 years ago (and gave a copy to my niece, now at University). I now read it to my toddler, who has quite a collection of Boynton books. Good, clear pictures and quirky humour, with the repetition of the word 'hippopotamus' makes this a favourite, but (see my title), a good ending is worth a lot.
