I was tasked, at short notice, to develop an Android application in a couple of weeks and pretty quickly turned to Amazon to see what books I had available to me to help after seeing the state of Google's existing documentation. And frankly I'm glad I did.

This book is well layout, simple to understand and great for getting an existing Java developer up to speed with Android's unique application model - without spending hundreds of hours banging your head against the Google documentation. Not only that but I noticed a (pretty minor) error in my printing and got a 6 month subscription to the CommonsWare e-print site - which has given me at least 2 updated versions of the book so far!

With code examples online and a writer who's clearly very involved with the Android community - I can't see a reason not to recommend this book to an developer with experience of Java. However, if you don't fall into that category - I would suggest getting some experience with Java first (there are plenty of books which can help there) - before getting hold of this book.

Overall, this book feels a little anaemic compared to what can be achieved under Android. The layout is a little odd too with chapters not always coming where you'd expect them to be. The final impression is of a reference book that assumes the reader is not only a coder, but one too busy to really go beyond the basic UI components provided as part of Android.

In fairness, writing a book for Android has to be like trying to hit a moving target so it is probably inevitable that parts of it will feel rushed or incomplete. Treat it as a reference, rather than a guide you can follow from start to finish, and it will serve adequately.

Or, rather, it would have done. This version only covers 1.0 and Android is now at 1.5.

Not that great 29 April 2009

This book is better than wading through the online docs, but not by a lot. I didn't like the author's informal voice, and the index is pretty bad. Instead, I'd suggest Professional Android Application Development (Wrox Programmer to Programmer), which I rely on heavily.

If you're new to mobile development or new to cell phone development, The Busy Coder's Guide to Android Development will get you started fast. It covers all of the basics, and gets you far enough to be able to be productive using Google's documentation. What more could you ask?

Thorough coverage! 23 July 2009
By E. Salazar - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I first bought Professional Android Application Development and thought it was pretty good as I went through it. However I realized when I started trying to write my own apps that there were huge areas left uncovered in that book. I turned to the online docs but found them to be very skimpy and had several problems I was just stuck with.

Out of desperation I bought this book and have found its coverage to be much much more detailed and helpful than either the online docs or my first Android book.

I think for people who really want to dig below the surface and do more than just simple toy examples, some additional help is needed and this book seems perfect.
