Whilst not containing the astounding stunt routines which categorise most of Keatons major work (e.g THE GENERAL, STEAMBOAT BILL JR.), BATTLING BUTLER still packs a punch! Those viewing this for the first time should be pleasantly surprised; it really is a very funny film.
Keaton plays a very spoilt (& very rich) young man, who is sent out into the countryside on a camping expedition, by his father, in an attempt to 'toughen him up'. How this would be achieved is anybodys guess, as Buster arrives at camp with a tent the size of a marquee, complete with king-size bed, wardrobe, bath and a valet/butler/cook in the diminutive shape of Snitz Edwards!
Buster proceeds to get himself mistaken for the boxing challenger Alfred 'Battling' Butler (he has the same name), and cannot then admit to the deception without losing face with his girl (Sally O'Neil).
The scenes at the training camp where Buster attempts to learn the 'noble art' are particularly amusing, and the interplay between Buster and his 'man' is excellent.
The picture quality of Battling Butler is tremendous (apart from a couple of scenes near the end where negative wear is apparent), you really can see from this release the sort of quality that 'silent' pictures could achieve. Oh, and the musical accompaniment is pretty good too.
The 2 shorts on this disc (The Frozen North and The Haunted House) are variable (though Haunted House has some excellent sight gags); but buy this disc for Battling Butler - essential for Keaton fans - still well worthwhile for everyone else.

Buster Keaton plays varied roles in this feature and short film compilation. Original accompanying organ music adds to the early cinema atmosphere, which sometimes is lost when replaced with jazzy comedy music chosen by "The Cosy Toes Jazz Project". As usual these stories explore the funny and complex relationships between the characters, with Buster Keaton's stunts and mile a minuate visual gags. I would heartily recommend this vol and I will certainly be collecting the other four.

Ever since I saw 'The General' some years ago, I've thought any Keaton film is worth having a copy of.
