By D. S. CROWE TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have always found the music of Busoni intractable, Reger dull, and have had an absolute antipathy to what passes for music from Pfitzner, so the odds were long on my giving a positive review to this set-indeed you may well wonder why I bought it all.
As I am aware of the high esteem that many hold for these composers, and I had not heard any of the works on the set, I felt impelled to explore them especially when performed by the incomparable Dresden Staatskapelle under Thielemann, the leading advocate for this music and whose conducting I so admire in Beethoven, Bruckner, Strauss and Wagner.

These are live recordings from 2011 caught in the wonderful acoustic of the Semper Opera, and the recording is excellent catching the rich, lustrous tone of the orchestra with plenty of detail on display.
The brief Busoni is a dark, meandering exercise in abstract tonality reminiscent of Scriabin to my ears, and is very atmospheric if somewhat abstruse in construction. It does not outstay its welcome.

Split on 2 discs though totalling only 79 minutes, the second disc contains Reger’s “A Romantic Suite” –and it is simply gorgeous! The opening movement is redolent of Debussy, at other times Delius and with the undercurrent of Wagner throughout. The second movement is playful, and I can hear strains of Sibelius, and the extended third contains elements of all of the above and more.
This means it is hard to isolate an individual musical voice for Reger-I could throw in early Schoenberg to the mix-from this piece, but it is a glorious wallow in late Romantic lushness and if you enjoy the music of any of the aforementioned, or Florent Schmitt for example, you will certainly enjoy this.
Reger aficionados-there are some!
