Product Description

Review

"You provided me with some great tips on getting started and I purchased a copy of your book.
I'm pleased to say that the business is going well. I have six pupils at present and all are making good progress. The parents are also very happy with the services I'm providing. I am combining this work with supply teaching during the day and working in the local library two days a week to ensure a regular income.
I would like to thank you again. Starting tuition is the best thing I could have done after recovering from my illness and your advice and book have been invaluable."

I was very disappointed by this book, especially by the nasty tone. The author clearly dislikes teachers - perhaps a chip on the shoulder? I found one or two helpful ideas but overall have found it unhelpful and not worth the money. Btw, after a year of private tutoring I am now fully booked-up and have a waiting list, and ALL my clients have wanted to see my teaching qualifications and CRB clearance - so much for people preferring non-teachers to teach their children! I also draw the line at exploiting people's fears about education along 'Daily Mail'-like lines; there's absolutely no need for that. I think the sample adverts are actually quite unpleasant and cynical.

I'd say to any practising teachers out there who want to try private tutoring ... don't buy this book. Spend the money on internet advertising instead and remember you don't have to take advantage of parents' perceived fears - they're not stupid.

This book provides lots of practical tips about setting up and practising as a tutor in the UK. (Lots of other tutoring 'how to' books have a USA focus.) In particular, there are helpful checklists and forms featured in the book which you can also download from the UoLearn website. However, I agree with other reviewers who have highlighted the poor tone of the book in places - it detracts from the rest of the book. Unfortunately, the author also takes issue with maths and literacy teaching techniques for which there is a strong evidence base. For example, anyone thing of setting up as a maths tutor should read also Rob Eastaway's books on 'Maths for Mums and Dads' to get a real appreciation of how maths is learned and taught in present-day schools. Worth buying for the practical tips.

I bought this book looking for inspiration and direction in how to use my skills in different, alternative ways. I'm not a teacher, but a coach and trainer, so my field is slightly different but the book gave many new ideas and potential ways for me to increase my earnings. I am sure it can inspire many to do the same - be creative, think sideways outside the box and transfer that to the person your tutoring; there is much wealth waiting for you in the pages of this book!

I have rated this item 'I don't like it' because, as a qualified primary school teacher looking to set up a private tutoring business, at times I would have to say the author's attitude towards and complete lack of respect for teachers is astounding! I purchased the item because I thought it might give me some tips on the paperwork side of things and an insight into the differences between tutoring and mainstream teaching, but instead it left me stunned and amazed as to how the author has managed to get away with his condescending, dismissive and quite frankly often very rude comments about the teaching profession as a whole. As he admits he has no teaching qualifications whatsoever and therefore has never actually taught in a school, he cannot possibly begin to appreciate how hard today's teacher works. Unbelievable!

I am preparing to start up as a private tutor in the autumn term, so thought this book would be invaluable. However, I am sorry to say that it has nothing much to offer. It is riddled with grammatical errors (heaven forbid that he should tutor any of my kids!) and there are numerous 'quotes' without a source. He continuously criticises the British education system, which is both unnecessary and distracting from the supposed purpose of the book.
The only things that were of any value at all were the ideas for advertising and the brief section on record keeping.
My advice would be to do your own research and preparation instead of wasting your money on this book.

An excellent book, very informative. Graham makes it sound so easy. I especially like his little stories about his experiences with children and the brief tests at the end of each chapter - It makes you think. How to Start a Business as a Private Tutor - Set Up a Tutoring Business from Home: Learn the Secrets of Success from Years of Experience in Tuition ... and Sample Adverts (Skills Training Course)

This book provides a lot of information but it wasn't the information I was looking for. I also felt the author spent a lot of the book just critising teachers
