A Truly Excellent Book, 24 Nov 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Business Excellence: The Integrated Solution to Planning and Control (Paperback)
An excellent text for both academic and business use. This book (rightly) spends the first 5 chapters taking the reader through Business Excellence concepts, Business Planning, Sales & Operations Planning & Master Production Scheduling. These subjects are critical to the success of the business excellence model and all too often not given the time needed in texts or businesses. Digging into the detail, Mr Robinson provides clear interpretation of the mechanics of a modern ERP system and explains the inter-relationships between program types and the critical need for data accuracy in order for the software to function in the correct manner. Kanban, Continuous Improvement, Purchasing and Engineering issues are all covered with the same clarity and guidelines for success. The book closes with an excellent software selection guide, jargon buster, implementation strategy & performance measures. I believe that this is an essential buy for anyone with an interest in Business Excellence, certainly one of the first books I would recommend for anyone who is contemplating, implementing or using an ERP system.

Guidance to Improvement in a Manufacturing Environment, 7 July 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Business Excellence: The Integrated Solution to Planning and Control (Paperback)
Here is a practical guide for manufacturers who want to improve their performance. Of the many things to like in this book, one of the most important is it is not afraid to get into the details!! Often details can be quite complicated, but the author dives into them in a clear, straightforward manner. For example, the section describing the Material Requirements Planning logic, showing the effect down the levels of the Bills of Material, was quite illuminating. Discussion of Kanban, new to this reader, was done quite well. Of particular value was the discussion on payback of buying and implementing new manufacturing software: costs and benefits must be calculated and compared- not an easy task, but one that the author emphasizes clearly and strongly. This is a book worth reading by the manufacturer interested in Business Excellence!!
