Product Description

Product Description
Part of a new series of textbooks for teachers on PGCE courses, on their induction year and in years 2 and 3 of their teaching career, this book aims to provide stimulating assistance to subject specialists by helping them find ways of thinking about their subject specialism, how to teach with it and how to engage with what pupils learn through it.

From the Back Cover

This book has been written for teachers of business education and economics in the years of their early professional development, including those on PGCE courses, those in their induction year, and those in years two and three of their teaching career. The book will also be suitable for subject leaders with mentor responsibilities and Advanced Skills teachers undertaking specialist inset and teaching support.

The book covers the training standards for NQTs and the Induction Standards. But it goes beyond this by fully exploring issues to do with subject knowledge in learning to teach, broadly accepting that an essential element of a secondary teacher’s identity is tied up with the subject taught. The book is divided into three sections:

  • framing the subject – which defines subject knowledge and raises questions about business education and economics as school subjects
  • teaching the subject – which looks at pedagogical, curricular and pupil knowledge
  • business, economics and enterprise within the professional community – which focuses on the place of business education and economics within the wider curriculum and the teaching community.

This book aims to provide stimulating assistance to subject specialists by helping them find ways of thinking about their specialism, how to teach with it and how to engage with what pupils learn through it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended reading for Business and Economics teachers, 9 April 2006
Firstly, some disclosure. I was a PGCE student of Dr. Brant (one of the authors), after having left my career in the City.

I was one of the diarists involved in some of Dr Brant's research on fieldwork, and we accompanied him for fieldwork in Poland. Fieldwork is dealt with comprehensively in Chapter 7 of the book ("Developing beginning teachers' subject knowledge and creativity through fieldwork activity").

I am currently Teacher of Economics at one of the country's top comprehensive schools.

Dr Brant and his colleague have put together a "one of its kind" book, totally geared towards teachers of Business Studies and Economics. It should be made recommended reading for all embarking on a teaching career in this subject area.

The book is neatly split up into 3 distinct sections and is packed full of all kinds of ideas that newer teachers, in their formative years, can readily apply.

For the benefit of those on their PGCE in Business Education:
My recommendation is to use Brant and Davies book for subject-specific issues and to use the seminal work "Learning to Teach in the Secondary School" (Capel, Leask and Turner) as a more general reference guide.
