BBC Review

Until now, cross-denominational Canadian combo Chromeo – aka David ‘Dave 1’ Macklovitch and Patrick ‘P-Thugg’ Gemayel – have skated perilously fine lines with no little success, soundtracking haircare ads en route. Their classic funk-pop set to 1980s-indebted electro rarely strayed into all-out over-sexed Flight of the Conchords-level musical satire. Business Casual, however, hurtles past the point of semi-ironic arched eyebrows into a no-man’s-land of previously unrealised vacuity – unashamed, admittedly, but no less excusable.

It all starts promisingly, Hot Mess encapsulating everything Chromeo seemingly align themselves with inside three and a half sticky minutes: an icily aloof female protagonist gives the duo hell over a strutting beat and bulbous keyboard flourishes. Yet it’s mere moments before the warning signs start flashing.

I’m Not Contagious sneaks in a hideous Daft Punk-on-bad-mail-order-Viagra verse, pointing to a looming lack of inspiration around the next bend. And knowingly self-indulgent lines such as Night by Night’s "C’mon girl, don’t make a fuss / Let’s have a conversation that’s not just about us" only further trigger sneaking suspicions that Chromeo operate as an intentional parody.

The exact moment where fromage overload becomes too crippling to ignore arrives within When the Night Falls, starring Beyoncé’s younger sister Solange Knowles. Debasing themselves is one thing. Reducing a versatile female vocalist to an unspeakably naff chorus fit for a Miami bar scene in one of the 1980s’ seemingly endless stream of straight-to-video cop movies is plain negligent. If plans aren’t already afoot for an accompanying video, a wind machine, a white Lamborghini and several curly mullet wigs should suffice, followed by some time alone to think about what they’ve done.

Digital album bonus track I Could Be Wrong is sure to entice a few indie-rock-inclined listeners to Chromeo’s party, featuring as it does Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig. Except it’s even more throwaway than standard Chromeo. And whereas the finest music of this ilk goes full pelt with either ideas or loins, sometimes concurrently, Business Casual is, as its title suggests, the ultimate middle ground. Come on in, gents, it seems as though your 15 minutes are almost up.

CD Description

For those still not in the know, Chromeo is childhood friends Pee Thugg and Dave 1 (Pee is the one who looks like a gang member and Dave is the French literature professor.) After having spent the last few years becoming one of our most beloved bands, playing sold out shows across the globe, these pioneers and purveyors of electro funk par excellence are releasing their shiniest, best and newest album 'Business Casual' due out late September and are touring to support it. This summer, Chromeo have already headlined at Lovebox and Glastonbury, performed with Hall and Oates, and torn down festival stages all across Europe and are rightly racking up critical acclaim on both sides of the pond, from Spin to Pitchfork to NME and Dazed and Confused. Chromeo are being hailed as one of the slyest, wittiest and most endlessly entertaining bands around and with Midnight Juggernauts supporting them on tour, their live shows are not to be missed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Chrom-e-o-dear 11 Oct 2010

If Chromeo set out to show how their creativity dried-up and actually came to an almost instant stop then they've done a fine job of it. The first 4 tracks here are vintage Chromeo and all worth downloading, but what happens from 5 to 10 I was not expecting.

Initial Alarm bells started to ring on 'You Make It Rough' which is stretched beyond, way beyond, it's limit at over 7 minutes - no Chromeo tracks should be over 5 minutes, there isn't enough progression in the 80s sound for that.

I could see the smoke when awful female vocals came in on next track 'When The Night Falls' - the 80s at their worst, single handedly flipping Chromeo's cool elements to their evil opposite.

The fire engine arrived for 'Don't Walk Away', while the blaze was out of control by the time 'J'ai Claqué La Porte' had finished. 'The Right Type' suggested that Chromeo weren't coming out of this alive, and with album closer 'Grow Up' the soaked, charred remains were all that was left of one of my favourite acts of the last few years.

Still, I have 2 albums (She's In Control & Fancy Footwork) and the 1st 4 tracks here (Hot Mess, I'm Not Contagious, Night By Night, Don't Turn The Lights On) to remember them by. Sniff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Retro fantastic! 24 Mar 2011

This Album is simply awesome; it requires a lot of talent to make a good electro album, it takes a hell of a lot more talent to make one sound as though it was recorded using the styles and techniques popular in the 80s and yet, feel fresh.

My one criticism is that the album just isn't long enough, it's over too soon, but leaves you wanting more!
