Amazon.co.uk Review
There was always something faintly dirty about On The Buses--and not just the humour, which was simply more of the polite strand of "blue" that British audiences had come to expect in the mid-1970s. It was the whole look: grey and miserable. And the setting: a dismal suburban bus depot, and an equally decrepit family home. Or perhaps it had something to do with Olive, and her lank greasy hair, and the knowing leer of Jack, Stan's lecherous fellow conductor and partner-in-crime. A working-class comedy, one step up from the Beckett-like squalor of Steptoe And Son, it starred Reg Varney as Butler, a larrikin bus conductor with a hopeless romantic track record, and Stephen Lewis as "Blakey", the inspector who tries valiantly to bring him undone. Like most British comedies of the 70s, the entire series --all 74 episodes!--was essentially built around four jokes: The Blakey Joke (the lads play a prank which results in Blakey suffering some horrific injury, and uttering his timeless catchphrase, "Oi 'ate you, Butler!"); The Olive Joke (husband Arthur commenting wryly on her ugliness); The Canteen Joke (Blakey's cost-cutting results in the canteen's closure); and The Clippie Joke (Jack pulls a bird). Fractional variations on these basic themes provided hours of distinctly un-PC fun for viewers of all ages. Look back in wonder. --Andrew McGuire

Synopsis

4.0 out of 5 stars A Laugh a Minute, 28 Jan 2005
I've only given this video 4 stars because, although the content is classic, the quality is not quite so good. A poor 'print' to be sure. I believe there's plenty of 'On the Buses' stuff now on DVD and I would recommend you buy that instead of this video.

Otherwise, the material is brilliant. There are four epsiodes on the tape:

1. GOING STEADY, in which Stan takes a fancy to Blakey's niece Sally (with hilarious consequences).
2. THE NEW UNIFORMS - in which Stan and Jack are mistaken for airline 'peelots' by two Swedish girls.
3. BREW IT YOURSELF - After drinking some of Stan's home-made beer Arthur actually finds Olive attractive.
4. THE CISTERN - Toilet troubles for Stan when the old cistern packs up and a new one has to be fitted PDQ. A DIY disaster if ever there was one.

All in all a fine example of late 1960s British comedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Pete & Dud, 28 Jan 2005
Those who remember Peter Cook and Dudley Moore from the 1960s (NOT ONLY, BUT ALSO etc.) will thoroughly enjoy this video. As should students of British comedy, who will perceive it as the veritable precursor to the later outings of John Cleese et al in Monty Python's Flying Circus.

In short, I suppose you could say that this item embodies the very best of 'Derek & Clive' - minus the bad language. Yet no less enjoyable for that, I have to say.

Well worth buying, before it goes out of print (as many good things often do).

3.0 out of 5 stars Dated but mildly amusing., 26 Jan 2001

Very much of the Carry On... and Confessions... era but fun on a wet Sunday afternoon. As long as you're just looking for a giggle and nothing too intelectually stimulating this'll do fine. Also my sister bears more than a passing resemblence for Olive so On The Buses will always have a place in my heart for providing such great teasing material.
