Amazon.co.uk Review

Do they mean, between the band and their listeners? Because let's face it, there's clearly a lot of ill-feeling there: the latter having initially embraced the former as a pop band for adults--on their lush, plaintive, somewhat studied debut--only to have them metamorphose, on that appalling third album (1996's To The Faithful Departed), into a kind of overblown protest act, with singer Delores O'Riordan wailing over the top like some self-proclaimed arbiter of all things noble, right and just. Not a good move. So this, their fourth release, sees them tone down the self-importance, turn down the distortion and return to the shimmering guitar-pop of "Linger." Admittedly, it's not all smooth sailing: O'Riordan's lyrics can still provoke unintentional chuckles. (The album's opening lines, in particular--"Suddenly something has happened to me while I was having my cup of tea / Suddenly I was feeling depressed. I was utterly and totally stressed"--are enough to make one's eyes water.) And the arrangements are once again overly-indebted to The Smiths. But a discernible return to form, nevertheless. --Andrew McGuire

5.0 out of 5 stars Lyrically Blessed or Lyrically Messed!!!! 24 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is an excellent album - the songs are simple and the melodies are great. So what if the lyrics can be somewhat cumbersome - Dolores' voice and the talent of the rest of the band always shine through!!!

I vote the Cranberries the best band of the 90s, and contrary to what some are saying here, this is one of their very finest albums.

,many more . I can Listen to it over and over. |This stuff is really inspiring and enjoyable. I just love all the songs including the meditative Animal Instinct, the spunky 'Loud and Clear',the amazing 'Just My Imagination' (my favourite Cranberries song and favourite song of the 90s),the bouncy 'Desperate Andy', the cotmeplative 'Whats on My Mind ' the gutsy rock song 'Delilah',the beautiful lullaby-'Dying in the Sun', the high energy Copycat and the bold Fee Fo Fi, a condemnation of sexual abuse of children.
Not only has Dolores got an angelic voice, the music is fantastic and so are the lyrics I hope the Cranberries continue to produce wonderful works of art for many years to come.
