Product Description

Product Description

Dark Horse brings forward something new in the Tim Burton program, and a first in the journal category. The cover art features Burton's "Pin Cushion Queen" from The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories; the image has been enhanced with a dozen or so tiny lighting elements concealed inside the journal's cover. When activated by a hidden on/off button, the colored jewels in Pin Cushion Queen's crown light up in different colors. The journal itself is 128 interior pages suitable as a compendium of the owner's secret thoughts and includes a non replaceable battery that will light the journal up to 1,000 hits of the on switch. Illustrated on back cover. Lettered book spine conceals spiral binding.

Okay...so if you're looking at this you are more than likely a Tim Burton obsessive like myself (in which case I congratulate you because you have excellent taste). I actually ordered my copy of the Tragic Thoughts Journal from the US eBay, not really knowing what to expect and not really caring (I was going through my 'lets buy every piece of Tim Burton memorabilia I can find' phase). However I was a little surprised with what I received. I was expecting an actual book with Tim Burton's ideas and thoughts written in it. Alas, this was not so. It is in fact, an empty, blank journal in which to write your own tragic thoughts.
It isn't particularly thick but is a decent size and follows the format of one page with lines, one just blank (although each page has a little Pin Cushion queen drawing in the corner). It is a hardback with a white cover and has a spiral bind inside. The cover is probably the real reason you would want to buy it as it features an awesome drawing of the Pin Cushion in which the pins actually light up via a little button which you press on the cover. Beware though! You only get a thousand light-ups and the battery is non-replaceable (remember the devil makes work for idle thumbs...).
All in all, this isn't the most essential piece of Tim Burton memorabilia and for all the hassle which you'll inevitableably have to go through to get it, it probably isn't worth it. BUT...if you are a true Tim Burton die-hard, this probably won't matter to you, in which case, I say go right ahead and scribble down all those dark, dark thoughts...

an almost blank journal 22 Dec 2009

Ok, so I misunderstood, here. I was under the impression that this was a compendium of Tim Burton's journals. I was quite curious to see what he might draw and write in a journal. However, it is a (mostly) blank journal for your own "tragic thoughts," not his. The left side of the page is lined, the right is dark-tinted, with sketches of pins and a pin cushion in the margins. I suppose you could draw on it with a combination of dark and white pencils. The light-up cover is a nice touch. It's not what I would want for my own uses, but I know just the person whom I think will like it a lot...

Cool journal 14 Nov 2011

Please note that this is an empty journal, for YOU to write in. My daughter, (and others) thought it was a journal that Tim Burton had actually written in already. Not the case. But a very unusual, (it lights up) and cool book.

Pretty awesome 20 Aug 2010

I love the front of the journal because it lights up when you press a button. The artwork is awesome. The journal is blank however. The pages are cute.
