Biography

The title of Gretchen Peters’ new Hello Cruel World is a pun on the famed exit line — a joke that, like the lovely melodies and deliciously textured arrangements framing these 11 songs — sweetens this captivating music spun from a year of turmoil. The Grammy nominated singer-songwriter from Nashville calls Hello Cruel World her “most close-to-the-bone work, written at a ... Read more in Amazon's Gretchen Peters Store

Product Description

Product Description

"I think great songs are born. They are born with all the urgency of childbirth, born out of pain, anger, joy, wit, and delivered by instinct, skill and love." - Gretchen Peters.

It is this passion for the song that fuels all facets of a career that has brought Peters to the Grammys twice as a songwriter, won her a CMA Song Of The Year award for the groundbreaking "Independence Day", taken her on repeated sold-out tours across the UK and Ireland, and seen the release of four critically-acclaimed albums.

Here she proves her own words true: out of the emotional remnants of what she calls a "mid-life epiphany", both personal and professional, she has forged a collection of songs - sometimes painful, sometimes hopeful, always brutally honest, and often transcendent.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Treasure Trove 15 April 2007
Format:Audio CD
We knew all along that Gretchen Peters was a topnotch singer & songwriter. "Burnt Toast And Offerings," her fifth release, proves it once and for all. Peters may not possess a powerhouse voice, but with each new album her singing becomes stronger . You'll be hard put to label her music, as she seemingly straddles all musical genres. This time around she even ventures into the field of jazz. The arrangements and production work mirror her songwriting skills, as many of her songs have great emotional depth and several cuts are of almost epic proportions lyrically, even though Peters is writing about everyday life.

All these amazing qualities are what many singer/songwriters strive for, but only occasionally are able to come up with. Gretchen Peters is a rare exception to this rule. She delivers the goods time after time. A must have album like her previous CDs. If you don't already own those timeless efforts, now is the time for you to correct that grave mistake!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! 14 Sep 2008
Format:Audio CD
I'm fairly new to Gretchen Peters, usually preferring the harder style of Lucinda Williams and Mary Gauthier. But this CD is truly fantastic. I saw Gretchen recently in concert in Glasgow and she described this as 'her divorce album', which helps to explain the raw pain in her songs. The lyrics of 'The Way You Move Me', also commented on by another reviewer, are simply perfect. Other great tracks are 'This Town' and 'Breakfast at Our House', the latter almost brings me to tears when I play it. But there are a few happier and more up-tempo tracks too - 'England Blues' has even made it onto my ipod for running at the gym! Gretchen's voice is perfect, as is the tone on this album. I can't rate this highly enough, and needless to say I now own Gretchen's entire back catalogue!

5.0 out of 5 stars short stories to music... 13 May 2007
Format:Audio CD
Gretchen has always been one of our best songwriters. Lucky that she's also been the most affecting interpreter of her own compositions. BURNT TOAST AND OFFERINGS adds another masterful collection of gorgeous, smart songs to her impressive catalog. She sounds like no one else. She writes like no one else. She's effusive with words yet spare in delivering them. The palette of instruments is exquisite: her and Doug Lancio's great guitars, subtle and moving use of strings, and thrilling appearances of an accordion, a concertina and a pennywhistle. But the heart, the joy and the tears start with her words--sung so poignantly with lots of quiet spaces between them for the listener to contemplate.

from "The Way You Move Me:"

YOU LEFT YOUR WORDS
ALL ACROSS MY MEMORY
YOU LEFT YOUR MARK
LIKE A BURNING BRAND
YOU LEFT YOUR FINGERPRINTS
ALL OVER ME
AND NOW YOU'RE EVERYWHERE I AM

IF I CRIED A THOUSAND TEARS
IF I LIVED A THOUSAND YEARS
I COULD NEVER FIND A WAY TO MAKE YOU SEE
I'LL NEVER UNDERSTAND THE WAY YOU MOVE ME

from "This Town:"

THIS TOWN IS A LOT LIKE ME
SADDER AND WISER THAN IT USED TO BE
A LITTLE SPRAWLED OUT, A LITTLE RUN DOWN
I WONDER WHAT'S GONNA BECOME OF THIS TOWN

ALL I WANNA DO TONIGHT IS KISS YOU IN THE STREET
SWAYING TO THE BEAT OF A RUSTY RADIO
ALL I WANNA DO IS FEEL YOUR ARMS AROUND ME TOO
PULLIN ON MY BODY LIKE AN UNDERTOW

THIS TOWN IS A LOT LIKE ME
A LITTLE COAT OF PAINT AND SOME TLC
AND SHE'LL LIGHT RIGHT UP IF YOU COME AROUND
YOU KNOW THAT YOU NEVER WANNA LEAVE THIS TOWN

BURNT TOAST AND OFFERINGS is filled with moments like these. Songwriting and the singer delivering the song don't get much better than this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great Peters album 2 May 2008
Format:Audio CD
I've loved Gretchen Peters for a long time. Apparently, this album was released last year and I didn't know until now. Why didn't anyone tell me sooner? I also didn't learn about "Halcyon" until about two years after it was released. I guess it shows how underappreciated she is as a performer. Many of her songs have been succesfully covered by other artists, but Peters's own recordings are just as good. Her voice is less polished, more fragile, than many of the others (Faith Hill, Martina McBride, Patty Loveless), but full of emotion and fits her songs perfectly. And the production is perfect.

Like "Halcyon", "Burnt Toast & Offerings" consists of mostly slow tempo songs. While "The Secret of Life" was immediately catchy, "Burnt Toast & Offerings" is meditative rather than catchy, and grows with repeated listenings. Still, there are up-tempo songs to be found here as well, such as "England Blues", and "This Town". This song alone is worth the price of the album.

"Burnt Toast & Offerings" is another great album from one of today's greatest songwriters. I don't want to miss her next one.

3.0 out of 5 stars It got close. . .but no cigar! 23 July 2013
Format:MP3 Download|Verified Purchase
There's a lot of excellent ladies out west, and a few here at home too. A tendency for them all to sound ' a bit the same' and that's where this album fails for me. Songs that I like and will listen to many times I'm sure; a voice that's as good as most and very easy on the ear but . . .just lacking in that certain something that you always hope that gives you that tingle and wow.
