Book Description

More than three centuries ago, Nicholas Winters irrevocably altered his genetic makeup in an obsession-fuelled competition with alchemist and Arcane Society founder Sylvester Jones. Driven to control their psychic abilities, each man's decision has reverberated throughout the family line, rewarding some with powers beyond their wildest dreams, and cursing others to a life filled with madness and hallucinations. At the heart of this curse is the Burning Lamp.

In BURNING LAMP by Jayne Ann Krentz writing as Amanda Quick, FIRED UP by Jayne Ann Krentz and MIDNIGHT CRYSTAL by Jayne Ann Krentz writing as Jayne Castle, you will meet the three men - past, present and future - of the Burning Lamp, descendants of Nicholas Winters. There is only one hope for them: each must find the artefact and a woman who can work the dreamlight energy that the device produces in order to reverse the dangerous psychical changes brought on by the curse - or risk turning into a monster...

Having read the beginning of the book as an excerpt in the previous one, I wasn't sure whether I was going to enjoy this one. Amanda Quick's writing is very different from Jayne Ann Krentz's and the previous book was a in a modern setting. I bought the book because I wanted to follow the Burning Lamp series.

This book is a precursor to Fired Up, as it is set in Victorian times. Crime lord Griffin Winters is the first ancestor of Nicholas Winters to show symptoms of the cerberus curse. Adelaide Pyne is a social reformist and comes to the attention of Griffin as a result of her brothel raiding. Both she and Griffin have mysterious pasts, which are gradually revealed as you go through the book. The interaction is superb, and the characters very endearing. Old friends including Lucinda and Caleb Jones (The Perfect Poison) turn up, and the ending was very clever, a neat solution to a tricky problem. The last book in the series is Midnight Crystal, set in the futuristic world of Harmony.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2nd in the Burning Lamp offshoot 11 May 2010
    Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is the 2nd book in the Arcane Society offshoot about the Winters family. Krentz is writing them as Krentz, Quick and Castle. Both this and the first book are good, better in fact, with the exception of the last novel introducing Caleb Jones, the founder of Jones and Jones and his wife Lucinder, than the Arcane series which has become rather samey.

There is good interaction between the two main characters in Burning Lamp and Lucinder and Caleb Jones also feature, as do a couple of other characters/families out of previous books. The book is a fast paced historical romantic suspense with lots of action in it. I enjoyed it and am now looking forward to the one set on the planet Harmony.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Superb 5 Aug. 2010
As always, Jane Ann Krentz is fabulous and this book remains riviting throughout. I always move away to other authors when waiting for more books from her but when I read another one, I am always reminded of how utterly brilliant her books are. Never a dissapointment!

3.0 out of 5 stars An OK middle to the series to date 17 April 2011
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
One of the things with this series is that the reader has to be adaptable as the author loves to jump from time to time so for one title you can be in the modern era, in another back to the Victorian which is pretty much what is happened here. Whilst this is a Victorian Era, it makes this the second book in the Dreamlight series and as such prior to reading this, readers should already be more than familiar with Fired Up. Whilst the characters are slightly better developed here, it is to a more modern interpretation of the female lead that we depart to within. Not that it's a bad thing but if you're writing a Victorian title you do have to stick to a certain amount of the conventions within.

That said, it is well written, the cast are predominantly suited to bring the title to its conclusion and yes, there is a good dollop of old fashioned romance that will weaken a number of fans at the knees. It's cleverly developed and will all in please many readers enough to keep them glued for the third part of the series, Midnight Crystal.

    4.0 out of 5 stars good 21 Nov. 2011
a return to the victorian era for this book in the burning lamp trilogy. already having mentioned a fair bit about the 2 main characters in "Fired Up" basically knew what plotline was gonna be. return of villain basil hulsey who is still up to no good like in the previous victorian arcane novels and lucinda and caled from the perfect poison return to aid adelaide and griffin. another good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arcane Society - wonderful series. 5 Dec. 2013
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I just adore the Arcane Society series and this is no exception. It's the first one with the Burning Lamp, and sets the scene for the next 2, which are Fired Up - a modern day story in her Jayne Ann Krentz persona, and Midnight Crystal - ser on Harmony written in her Jayne Castle alter ego. All Great Books.
