A New Fan 28 July 2009
By Alex J. Ferguson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I was given this book by a friend; and as a relative novice to the hardcore scene, I was initially skeptical. However, the author introduces five major themes of the movement in plain terms within the first five chapters--Politics and Social Awareness, Straight Edge, Animal Rights, Spirituality, and Sound--easing in the casual reader and laying the groundwork for the heart of the book, which consists of overviews and interviews with each of the major acts from '90s hardcore.

What I most enjoyed most was reading how each individual act incorporated some or all of the aforementioned themes of the hardcore movement into their own music and stage performances, presented in thorough, unbiased fashion by the author.

Again, having little exposure to the movement, I was initially hesitant to delve into such a thick book covering a relatively narrow subgenre of music, at least from my perspective. But I was more than drawn in by the first few chapters and looked forward to learning more and more of the movement as I read further along. Definitely recommeneded for anyone who'd like to learn more about the '90s hardcore revolution.

Anybody who grew up listening to punk and hardcore during the nineties like I did will appreciate this book. It really goes in depth about the attitudes and trends going on during this time.

Definitely worthwhile if you're interested in hardcore. 30 May 2009
By E. M. Anderson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is a very thoughtful and well-researched documentation of the American hardcore music scene in the 1990s. If you were part of that culture (as I was), or just have an interest in it, then reading Burning Fight is definitely worth your time.
