Thankyou Cherry Red for releasing this gem of an album . 80s music lovers will probably already have this on vinyl or a NE best of. Nevertheless this definitive reissue features a crisp remaster along with a generous selection of bonus tracks that is well worth the purchase.

Naked Eyes are a largely unheralded early eighties synth pop duo, certainly they are not well known when compared with their more illustrious peers such as Human League, Pet Shop Boys and OMD. Most of the tracks are of a consistently high quality. The vocalist is a slightly less gravelly version of Rod Stewart (don't let that put you off), whilst the classically trained keyboardist knows how to put together infectious synth bass riffs and catchy lead-line melodies (think Dave Ball of Soft Cell or Vince Clark of Yazoo). The best known track is the cover of Always Something There to Remind Me, which was a deserved hit in the USA but not over here. Emotion in Motion burrows it's way into your skull and won't get out, it's the sort of track which a car manufacturer like Alfa Romeo or Renault ought to pick up and use on their TV ads. Voices in My Head is an equally rousing ditty. If you like Pet Shop Boys, Naked Eyes are in the same mould. If you're a fan of 80's synth pop, long-term or quite new to the genre, this album is definitely worthy of a listen. If you fancy listening to a couple of albums of this ilk, try this one back to back with Thomas Dolby's The Golden Age of Wireless. As a teenager, this sort of music inspired me to play keyboards, and I well remember learning the chords to Emotion in Motion on a Roland SH101 synthesiser, dreaming of becoming the next Vince Clarke. Alas, I became a solicitor instead!

Although for the most part a good job has been done on this reissue, I was gutted to find that the US Remix single version of Promises Promises seems to be notably pitched up. This was probably done for the sake of fitting everything on a single disc but I find it extremely poor that one of the best versions of this runs at a much higher BPM than it should.

Anyone who loves 80's music will love the CD. So glad it has been releaed on CD at last and can now replace the vinyl version that has seen better days. Hope the outstanding Cherry Red records will release the follow up album on CD.
