Biography

THE THE STORY

UPON A TIME: Itʼs a well-worn cliché to describe music made by passionate, maverick souls as “timeless” but on visiting the songs of THE THE, itʼs hard not to think of them as complete outsiders. These unique, prescient, fevered songs resonate with basic truths about the human condition and seem to exist beyond the perishable dictates of ... Read more in Amazon's The The Store

Before the pristine, self-concious lyrics & production values became The The's trademark, came this the original. Melodic, rythmic, grungey- impossible to pigeon hole- this is one of the very few vinyl LPs I'll replace with a CD - though the crackles on vinyl only add to the overall sound. Apparently Matt was so embarrassed by his voice he put it through loads of fx, which just adds to the other-worldliness.. Intense, smouldering- burning blue soul

I can't believe nobody has reviewed this. The The can never be the band they were (Matt Johnson), since his decision to play live/go mainstream. Yes 'Dusk' is brilliant, as is 'Infected' & most of the slightly bland 'Mind Bomb'- but 'Hanky Panky'? the INXS sounding 'Naked Self'?...
Originally released as 'Burning Blue Soul' by Matt Johnson- this is now given a re-release as The The (complete with Andy Dog cover!). This, and the 'Cold Spell Ahead' single prove MJ was once a genius...Could the nice people at 4AD/Epic think about reissueing 'The Pornography of Despair'& 'Controversial Subject'?
OK, 'Burning Blue Soul' is a 5 star classic- as good as 'Soul Mining' or the tracks such as 'Mental Healing Process' or '3 orange kisses from Kazan' (the latter is closest in sound to BBS)...Wire/Wir- members/ex-member Gilbert & Lewis help out on a few tracks- the tone is close to Wire's 'I should have known better' or Newman/Lewis 'Alone' from 'A-Z'...This is a very strange sounding album- imagine a blend of Lou Reed & Tom Waits recorded on a lo-budget in a Cabaret Voltaire 'Yashar' style & you might be close...Yes, it's bleak stuff...but after many listens it will become the late night soundtrack to your lives...I s'pose it's not too far from Magazine's 'Permafrost' or Banshees/Cure. It is also close to the collaborations Johnson made with Marc Almond- with Marc & the Mambas: 'Untitled', 'Angels' & 'Your Aura' (where is this song now???)...The best song here is 'Another Boy drowning'-not as polished as the Johnny Marr The The vs the World version on 'Shades of Blue'- but possibly more charming...A classic & proof that the 80's were a lot more interesting than the monoculture of nostalgia tv will have you believe.

I first bought this album way back in 1981, and when I listened to it, it changed my whole perception of how song writing should be. However, this album is as far as I know taken from the 1983 remixes which were not a patch on the original 81 mix. When Burning Blue Soul was re-released in 1983 the whole album was remixed for some reason, best known to Mr. Johnson. It seemed to lack something the original vinyl album had.... And i'm not the only one to moan about the 83 remixes. if I remember correctly NME also made comment and the music press in general raised a few eyebrows regarding the motive behind remixing such a *perfect* album.

in its original mix, I would have given this album 5 stars.... no problem, but in this guise?... i give it just 4. But it's still very relevent today.

if you want to hear the album in it's original form you need to seek out the original vinyl "psychedelic eye" cover release, credited to just Matt Johnson.

Having just heard this album for the first time in ten years it's actually much better than I remember - which is surprising as apart from a couple of songs it used to leave me completely cold.

If you're a The The fan wondering whether to give it a try, bear in mind that it's completely different to anything else Matt Johnson ever did. Written in a pub basement, it sounds nothing like The The, being far more experimental and avant-garde, the only recognisable The The sound being his voice, and even this is buried beneath layers of effects (reputably because during the recording sessions he became convinced that he couldn't actually sing).

The overall effect creates an album of ghostly, sometimes spikey drugged out fuzz - which is ironic as he claimed to have been on nothing stronger than orange juice when he wrote it.

In my humble opinion quite simply one of the greatest albums in history. When I first heard this album back in the early 80's I was completely blown away. It is still the same today. It will remain timeless and deserves to be on a par with the likes of Sgt Peppers. Buy it, love it and thank Matt for this work of genius.
