5.0 out of 5 stars Takes you back to the (good) old days ..., 20 Nov 2001

Too many years ago to mention I managed to get hold of the double vinyl version of this compilation for £12 - then an absolute fortune. It still takes pride of place in my collection as a great exampole of the way punk compilations SHOULD be made.

As punk compilations go this is the best there is, leaving aside the well-known names of the punk genre in favour of the "smaller" players.

This is a wonderful mix of madness, switching from the relatively comic - Bingo Masters Breakout, Russians in the DHSS to the almost lunatic screams of GBH's "City Baby Attacked by Rats" and the Dead Kennedy's "Holiday in Cambodia".

For those of us old enough to admit remembering the 70s there's bound to be something here to raise a smile of remebrance and for those who missed it altogether there is no better compilation.

I like sleeves which spoof Beatles albums and this one is spot on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bursting at the seams with fierce yet catchiest songs., 7 Jan 2000
By Carlo Matthews "carlo" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Burning Ambitions Vol.1 (Audio CD)
Many punk anthologies have found their way into the market since the release of "Burning Ambitions" in the late 70's. Few, however, are this enjoyable and representative of the various colors of (mostly) British punk. Besides bursting with sharp, catchy, and refreshingly inventive songs, this compilation is likely to introduce new listeners to a host of not-so-famous bands that populated the British punk scene and were enjoyed by thousands. The anthology offers a rich and thoroughly exciting palette that will leave you singing the tunes on the list for days on end. And, unlike many other anthologies, this one definately concentrates only on the good material released by these bands. Don't expect any Sex Pistols or Clash or Banshees, but do expect songs as good as any released by these. On a final note, this album is also fascinating today for the contrast it presents with current punk-influenced bands and shines a light on a style in its purest form.
