This is the second book in the new series set in Kenya, featuring Jake, an American ex-policeman, and, Jouma a policeman in Kenya. A great continuation with 3 deaths in the first 3 chapters! This is really well written and the ending keeps you in suspense and waiting eagerly for next book to see what happens next!! Not going to spoil it for you but it's one of those endings where you want to read the next book straight away! Once again you see 4 different stories emerging before they all link to show you the big picture he wants you to see. There is plenty of action and mystery, again also the main suspect is not fully identified till the end.
There are plenty of bodies, a great feel for Kenya and some great new characters.
If you liked Bait then you will love this, everyone should give this a read, he is a author that I am going to keep an eye on as I really like this.

A good light read, without the all to common "macho hero". Most of the characters appear lifelike, while others have been plucked out of an American dime novel. And that's what ruins the book. The author is depending on the reader having no knowledge of Kenya. For those who don't, the book works, for those who do, it is an insult.
A bit more research would have removed the jive talking Dutch whores, Chinese cleaners, and remembered that Mombasa is a coral island and can only hold buildings of a certain height.

If you like well written thrillers with 3 dimensional characters then you will enjoy The Jake and Jouma series. I like to travel and enjoy reading books set in different countries, a holiday in my imagination when I cannot afford to be away. Both Bait and Burn move along at a good pace and keep the reader guessing right up until the end. I liked the main characters and definitely want to read more about them. But the author does have a habit of killing off people when you least expect it so I am wondering who will feature in the next instalment. Having said that I want to point out that although murder is central to both books and the bodies do pile up, the books are not violent gore fests as is the case in so many detective novels these days. A welcome change as far as I am concerned as I do not want to read graphic descriptions of pain and torture and am most interested in the detection aspects of a story. I am looking forward to the next book.
