Product Description

'Kyle Mills is a writer to watch' TOM CLANCY Quinn Barry wants to be an FBI agent - someday. Right now she's just a nobody, a computer programmer toiling in a basement office, revamping ancient computer programming against impossible deadlines. Only, carrying out some routine maintenance on the FBI's new Combined DNA Index System - CODIS - Quinn finds a link between five unsolved crimes, a series of brutal murders that it has never matched before. Telling her boss of her discovery, however, has unexpected repercussions. Blamed for the 'error' and immediately reassigned to Quantico on what turns out to be little more than a routine upgrade, Quinn begins to suspect a more frightening scenario than a mere glitch in CODIS's programming. What if there is a serial killer at work whose activities have up to now been masked by the very system set up to detect him or her? Her suspicions cost Quinn her job, but that's the last thing on her mind as she finds her own life at risk. It's certain no one is going to believe that a 22-year-old computer clerk has unearthed one of the agency's darkest, dirtiest secrets - a US military machine prepared to overlook various character flaws in their key personnel, even psychopathic tendencies... --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Burn Factor is quite possibly the best action thriller I have ever read. It is full of twists and turns, which keeps the reader on the edge and guessing what happens next. The story itself is rich in detail, well researched and plausible. The characters are very believable and (some!) are ones you genuinely start to care about as the plot unfolds.

I'll try and keep the spoilers down to a minimum when giving the basics of the story. The core character is an FBI computer programmer called Quinn Barry. She is assigned the task of re-structuring the FBI's DNA database program, which matches crimes committed throughout the country where DNA has been recovered from the crime scene. Quinn discovers that there is a series of unsolved murders of young, intelligent, beautiful women (which she could also be described as) that, for some reason, have never been detected before. She informs her manager, from which point on her life is turned upside down as a sinister conspiracy begins to close in on her...

This is just a starter for the story. From this point onwards the story moves at a rapid and interesting pace. Much of this is down to Kyle Mills' detailed but to-the-point style of writing, which doesn't get bogged-down in over-description (as many other books in this genre do). The chapters are short and help to build the story as they switch between the movements and actions of the characters involved.

All-in-all, I would have to say that Burn Factor is the best action thriller I have read so far. I found myself burning with anticipation about the next chapter every time I had to put the book down. And now I'm burning with anticipation to get my hands on another Kyle Mills book. If this one is anything to go by, I'm in for a treat...!

excellent 17 Sep 2001

Really excellent. I immensly enjoyed his other books but was getting tired of the Beamon character who simply gets too depressing after three books. This books contains sharp one liners and a great underlying humour even in dour situations.

great but not nice 13 Feb 2010

It took a while for this to get going but once it did I didn't want to put it down. Even through the segments describing the torture, mutilation and sexual perversion which while thinking them too graphic were essential to the tale. I felt like it was hard working getting through these elements, finding them unpleasant and questioning their necessity. But they worked they sickened and repulsed me and made me want to keep going, to seek resolution. Another great book by this author.
