Authentic account of Burlesque! 27 Oct. 2009
By Sigrid R. Spangenberg - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Opening the pages of this book is like looking through a huge picture window catching a glimpse into the lives and careers of the remarkable and talented Entertainers who graced the stages of the various Clubs and Theaters throughout the US and abroad. The inserts of 'old time comedy skits' are hilariously funny, plus the mention of a few Neo-Burlesque Entertainers that are emulating the originators is very complimentary to the Art and History of Burlesque. Buy the book; you will enjoy re-living the glorious past of Burlesque!

Another Winner 26 Oct. 2009
By Sandra Grabman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This author wrote an earlier book about burlesque that won 2 awards, but this one is even better. It has the most complete information I've ever seen on the subject and scads of photos, as well. It brings alive a form of entertainment that we'd only heard about. Way to go, Ms. Briggeman!

The story of Burlesque 24 Oct. 2009
By Jennie - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I recently purchaced Burlesque: A Living History.

The first thing I liked about it when opening the box was the size of the book and how thick it was.

As I started going through it's pages I could not believe all the stories and photos there were in it. I could not put it down.

Anyone going through it will get a true picture of what burlesque was really like.

Looking at all the pictures and stories it gives you an idea of the work that went into putting this together. A true labor of love.

I agree that it would make a wonderful gift for friends at Christmas time...I love it!!

Backstage in Burlesque 20 Nov. 2009
By LJS - Published on Amazon.com

If you are a little older, you may remember what real burlesque was like -- all stage show (no films), chorus line, great comics.

Jane Briggeman has done a great job of assembling photos and mini-biographies of many of the performers who were the backbone of old fashioned burlesque, but she was not content to stop there. She includes several of the old time comic bits (they are best read aloud to get the effect they had.), photos and descriptions of a number of the theaters (My remembrance is of the Fox theater in Indianapolis which is just listed and the President Follies in San Francisco which is described.)

In addition, she talks about the performers who are attempting to carry on this style of traditional burlesque.

This is a fascinating book well worth owning. I recommend it very highly.

Visiting old friends! 5 Mar. 2010
By Dusty Burrows - Published on Amazon.com

I enjoyed the book and the photos at least in part because I knew and worked with so many of entertainers featured in the book. Since many of them are alive and well, it will make a great book to take with me to the next Exotic World convention in Las Vegas where I can get a few autographs!
