classic photobook,

This review is from: Burke + Norfolk: Photographs from the War in Afghanistan by John Burke and Simon Norfolk (Hardcover)
i must admit that i was sceptical about this book - the pairing of Simon Norfolk's 2010 images with those of Burke from the 1800s. I needn't have worried - rather than re-creating his Victorian forebears' images, tNorfolk's images compliment and echo those of Burke. It works brilliantly and I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Some old, some new, some better than others,
By F. B. Jeffery - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Burke + Norfolk: Photographs from the War in Afghanistan by John Burke and Simon Norfolk (Hardcover)
A very good collection of photos from the British era (Burke - 1870s), frequently juxtaposed with similar shots from this decade (Norfolk). My Afghan interlocutor found disconcerting the book's list of captions at the end of the book rather than with the appropriate picture. I purchased a second copy as a gift, so the binding's tendency to warp was disappointing. Those quibbles aside, the book is a handsome collection primarily of British troops and places in settings around Kabul and Kandahar. Posing recent groups in the same manner as Burke's subjects created some amusing contrasts. No great insights but some very lovely pictures.
