From the Inside Flap

Have you ever wondered if there was a God or something out there?

Have you ever had an experience of something extraordinary, something some people might call spiritual?

Have you ever thought about what we’re all here for? What you are here for?

Because young people do.

But these, and many other things, are being buried under the weight of modern living.

Phil Rankin spent over 3 years in nightclubs, pubs, parks, on street corners, and in cafes all over the UK, chatting with people wherever he could find them. This, the first study of its kind, engaged with a wide diversity of people in various locations and this is your opportunity to hear and respond to their remarkable voices.

This book is an essential read for those who are concerned with understanding the importance that young people place on spirituality in their lives. It delves deep into the real issues young people face and explores their openness in discussion and exploration of the bigger things that influence them. Whether young people are professing a faith or a rejection of faith, they are illustrating that they are influenced by many things around them, factors both internal and external to their understanding of themselves and their place in the world.

The author has captured, unlike any other, a real sense of what young people feel about spirituality, think about spirituality, and how they act out their spirituality - whatever their understanding of the term. This research fully explains the concept of spirituality and then explores its many interpretations by young people across the UK.

This is a book that will challenge those in the church who can't understand why it is in decline, those who wonder why RE isn't working and those who ask the question `how do we communicate with young people on the bigger issues?' without ever trying! The conclusions and recommendations raised are not only directed at the church but at society as a whole. Prepare to be challenged!
