This book is my absolute favourite of the de Burgh series and probably in my top 5 all time favourite books.
Geoffrey de Burgh draws the short straw and is forced by the King Edward's decree to marry Elene Fitzhugh whose father was the villian in Taming the Wolf. Elene is no prize to be taken lightly, she murdered her first husband on their wedding night and is known throughout the country as a vile, foulmouthed she-devil. Geoffrey is the most learned and patient of the brothers, and as he lives with her, he starts to see behind the rude behaviour to the person hiding within. Elene has not had an easy life and has sought to protect herself as best she could and armour herself with anything she can. Geoffrey's gentle behavour is at odds with everything she has ever experienced and she starts to watch his back reasoning to herself that she might as well keep this husband as the King will no doubt just wed her off again if anything happens to him.
The characters are well formed and they flow together effortlessly. It has the ususal bumps in the road of love but in this book you can feel how real they are and how hard each character works to overcome. It is also nice to catch up with The Wolf and Marion and watching their firey relationship is a revelation and quite scary educational experience for Elene.
If you buy this book, your copy will soon be like mine, sad, worn, falling to bits but loved!
