Elvis Sings the Great British Songbook

Biography

Elvis Aaron Presley is one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, but mere numbers cannot begin to explain the colossal cultural impact he had in the mid-20th Century. He was a central figure in the transformation of the grey, conservative 50s into the technicolor 60s through the liberalizing effect of rock and pop music. Frank Sinatra had proved extremely popular in the 40s with young ... Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

5.0 out of 5 stars The Burbank Trilogy is Now Complete 8 Feb 2002
Format:Audio CD
Burbank 68 compliments Tiger Man and Memories as the definitive trilogy of the 68 special.

A box set would have been great, but I urge you to buy all three. This is sensational music, including pre-show reharsals and plus the second of the stand-up shows.

The sound quality is excellent, on this, a strong contender for the best music the King ever made.

Infact the 68 special as a forerunner to the MTV Unplugged concept, with Elvis and band-mates in the middle of a small audience, raw and gutsy, as good as he ever was and better than anyone else could have dared to be.

With the 35th anniversary of the 68 special next year I hear that a special DVD is on the cards: hopefully, with all of the footage from both stand-up shows, both sit-down shows, the original broadcast and rare footage!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best 68 Special disc 11 Sep 2000
Format:Audio CD
I managed to get a copy of this disc while at Graceland, and it's my favourite of all the comeback special sets that have come out.

You get a dozen or so tracks that were recorded in Elvis' dressing room, while they were working out what they were going to play, an alternate vocal performances from the special ('If I can dream', and the whole staged (as opposed to the unplugged section) songs from the 8pm June 29th show.

Sound quality is exceptional - I can't recommend this disc enough. If you're an Elvis fan, or you're wondering what the fuss was all about, here's your evidence.

4.0 out of 5 stars Elvis - Burbank '68 29 Mar 2005
Format:Audio CD
The 'live' material (taken from the 8pm show on 29/6/68 except Blue Suede Shoes and the Road Medley segment which are from 6pm) is explosive and presented here in seering sound. The only quibble is that Jailhouse Rock appears to have been sourced from the '68 Special soundtrack album familiar from the 1960's and it's been spliced to follow Can't Help Falling In Love very clumsily. The edit to the following track, Don't Be Cruel, is better but not entirely smooth and one wonders why BMG didn't simply let the first generation master tape from the 8pm show run its natural course for these three consecutive songs. The informal jam session is for die-hards only, but Elvis's singing and the overblown orchestral arrangements are breathtaking and make this is an unmissable disc.
