Product Description

Product Description

Buntus Cainte (English: Basic Speaking) was a programme aimed at teaching the Irish language that was broadcast on Radio Telefis Eireann in Ireland, beginning in 1967. The show was presented by Maire O Neill and Aileen Geoghegan. The programme catered for people with little or no Irish. Phrases were spoken by the presenters in both Irish and English, and were also overlaid (in Irish) on a simple static cartoon relating to the phrase. Buntus Cainte is the most successful course in Irish ever, and is in continual demand. Now for the first time the course books and listening material are available as part of the same package. The material from the original recordings has been remastered and is now on audio CD attached to this book.

Buntus Cainte is a standard beginning-Gaelic text created to introduce the reader to the language's idiosyncrasies. Rather than act as a rulebook for grammer and a list of vocabulary, it offers dialogues and phrases which accurately represent the tone and structure of the Gaelic language.

The Buntus Cainte books and tapes are an easy way to learn some basic Irish vocabulary and simple sentences. The series is designed to be "first steps in spoken Irish," and the steps are easy to follow. The tapes and pictures are helpful and make the course fun, for adults as well as children.

very simple 19 Sep 2008

Love the book! It's very simple to read for my first attempts and progresses very nicely into conversations. I haven't had a chance to listen to the cassette tapes yet (yes, cassette tapes), but I'm sure they will be just as easy to follow as the book is. I just hope my old cassette player works when I clean off the dust.

An excellent first step 15 Oct 2010

A well conceived approach to learning what can at best be described as a "challenging" language. The inclusion of the CD and the drawings means that the student is able to see and hear the words at the same time, thus enabling what is commonly called the audio-visual approach. Grammar can be imparted visually rather than through endless rules and lists, and vocabulary is learned through situations. It is no surprise that this book has its legendary reputation; it is clearly as good as it gets for students who do not have daily access to a teacher.
