Product Description

Review

I get sent quite a lot of books...and can't get past the first few pages of most of them. Thankfully Bunker 10 was an exception. I raced through it. All the excitement of a computer game and all the tricksiness of The Matrix. Plus a lot of humour, some fun characters and no squeamishness about violence. Great stuff. I can't remember when I last read a book with such a high body count. If there were more books like this out there maybe boys would be reading more. (Charlie Higson )

By TeensReadToo TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Seven teenagers, all of them geniuses, live at the Pinewood Military Installation: the most secretive, state-of-the-art military base hidden in the middle of the woods, along with military personnel and some scientists. We don't know what they're doing there; in fact, they're not so sure they know, either. What we know is that on December 24th, the whole place will explode, and there will be no survivors. Or will there be?

What was the cause of the explosion?

Was it related to fifteen-year-old Jimmy's plan to sneak out of the base, by placing transmitters and fooling the guards with his newly created virtual simulations?

Did it have anything to do with the special convoy that arrived on the base mysteriously?

Did the highly classified Project Flower, taking place on the lowest level, go awry?

Did it have anything to do with the disappearance of teen May Rose?

You'll have to read this wildly futuristic thriller to find out.

J. A. Henderson has created an intelligent, suspenseful novel with all the ingredients of the perfect thriller: a confusing plot, virtual simulations, DNA alterations, time travel, shootings, blasts, and, of course, the good guys and the super-evil bad guys.

How to describe Bunker 10 without giving the plot? Well, it's a high-concept, fast-moving, sci-fi thriller, packed full of interesting ideas and is unafraid to challenge the reader. The plot is admittedly demanding, with plenty of twists and turns, including some doozies that are almost impossible to spot, but Henderson drives it forward with considerable skill, energy and aplomb.

The quirky, unpredictable nature does require the reader to think and I can see this being off-putting for some teens who are only after an easy read. The characters are interesting, if a little flat, and at times it is hard to follow who is speaking and when. Vocabulary is fairly simple, suggesting this is aimed at younger readers, however the complexity of the ideas and amount of violence would better suit an older audience, so I was unsure who the target readership was. Having said that, this is the sort of book an adult can pick up and enjoy without feeling patronised.

Obvious influences are first person shooter video games, Star Trek and Michael Crichton. South Park even has a joke borrowed. Dodgy physics and biology aside, Henderson clearly knows what he is doing and delivers in this hugely enjoyable romp, which was a deserved winner of the Royal Mail Book Award and shortlisted for the Waterstone's Best Children's Book. Perfect for 14 to 16 year old boys and well worth a read.

Waste of Time! 25 Nov 2008

Format:Paperback
This book was intensly confusing and very unrealistic. It is a shoddy copy of Anthony Horowitz and CHERUB with are both far better. The ending was intensly confusing and this book didnt suck me in at all. Although, you either love it or you hate it. I hate it!
