Review

"Linda Geddes is not afraid to ask anyone about anything! From the stream of contradictory advice to pregnant women and new parents to those little moments of wonder, Geddes digs into all of them, looking for the evidence and exploring the science. In this book she shares what she's found, with the straightforward answers and easy-going humour that is so welcome in early parenthood. Don't get pregnant without it!" (Tracey Brown, Sense About Science)

"[Geddes] combines scientific research with a light and humorous tone to answer burning questions" (The Bookseller)

"Finally! A book on pregnancy, birth and babies that cuts through the myths, side-steps preachy prescriptions, and turns to the evidence. Bumpology transforms common parental anxieties into fuel for a fascinating journey through the science of the bump." (Hannah Devlin, Science Editor of The Times)

"What a BRILLIANT book! The antidote to anecdote, a great survey of current evidence. Just what the midwife ordered!" (Professor Alice Roberts)

"This book answers all the common pregnancy, birth and newborn questions... Thought-provoking and never boring, I loved it." (Mother and Baby)

Wonderful warmly written book from a mother with experience of labour and childbirth, which takes an evidence-based approach to the subject. The author looks at the controversial questions that arise during this confusing time in a woman's life and finds out what the scientific studies have shown. Instead of the myths and heresay, she provides advice from studies so that mothers-to-be can make up their own minds about whether a risk is significant or so low that it is outweighed by other issues. Highly recommended.

As I am shortly to become a father, i have been reading extensively on the subject and have found a lot of the literature available to be based more on opinion than fact. What a breath of fresh air this book is. I am much happier making an informed choice about what we do with regard to our unborn child and the time after the birth. This book gives you the facts from scientific studies, and armed with this knowledge you can decide for yourself. No old wives tales, no agenda, just the truth as proven by research.
I've found it to be an easy and engaging read, and i feel better prepared for the whole experience. Thank you.

This book has been a life line.
The author has referred to a huge range of scientific studies and provides information in a clear, succinct way that allows you to make your own mind up about what to do.
The book is really well structured and easy to dip in and out of.
My husband likes it because it is 'written by a scientist not a hippy like all the other books'.
For me, this was about the best book out there about pregnancy and it has helped me to feel confident about the decisions I have made during pregnancy.

Bought this book after seeng the author talk about it on breakfast television and was not disappointed.
There are so any things that we are told you mustn't do during pregnancy but have never really understood the evidence based around them ( if any) and how much there is.. The author presents the facts and size of any studies read so you are able to make your own mind up and make an informed choice about certain topics.

Re the previous comments about foetal alcohol syndrome - it's a shame that some reviewers have found it necessary to base their whole review on this topic rather than reviewing the book as a whole and rating it appropriately. The author does NOT say that it is ok to drink large amounts during pregnancy, she simply presents the evidence found on the topic.

Overall a really useful and interesting book that I would thoroughly recommend!

As a researcher myself, I really appreciated the neutrality in this book, the presentation of the facts and the explanation of the studies which enable us to know that not everything is know. There is no axe to grind, it's simply this si the research - make up your own mind.

Great!

I picked this book as a starting point for pregnancy reading and I am glad I did, its is informative and the scientific facts and statistics are really interesting. I am glad I picked this first as it has got me to question some of the ideas I had and to look at other options more open-mindedly, I have recommended this book to others and will no doubt go back and read some of the chapters again.

With so many myths flying around about pregnancy it's helpful to have some advice backed by real evidence. It's an easy read and a breath of fresh air.

I hate reading books about how to have the perfect pregnancy, or how to be the perfect mum. I wanted a book based on science and facts. I loved this book so much, particularly as it has a whole chapter on how to put babies to sleep. My husband is currently reading it and agrees with me that its very informative
