Reviews

George Kitchener Bulman, TV's scruffiest, quirkiest cop, has retired from police work. But old habits die hard, and the plan to spend his days mending clocks in his South London antiques-cum-junk shop went out of the window when he found himself partnering with Lucy McGinty, a university drop-out with a passion for criminology, in a private detective agency.

The classics-quoting detective is now back on the street, tackling murder plots, terrorism and international espionage, and even dodging the attentions of a contract killer. But the old skills which turned Bulman into a cult figure in Granada's classic police series Strangers are ever present - along with the tatty string gloves and plastic carrier-bag "briefcase" - and this time around, old "GBH" is free of the police code...

Don Henderson stars opposite BAFTA nominee Siobhan Redmond in this second series, scripted by Strangers stalwart Murray Smith and featuring appearances by Iain Cuthbertson, Robert Hardy, Ingrid Pitt, Thorley Walters, Jack Shepherd and Graham Crowden.

This is basically a reprint of my review for the first series, so if you've read it don't bother beyond the next paragraph.

Basically we get here more of the same great stuff we got in Bulman - Complete Series 1 DVD Boxset. Very last 7 episodes until gracefully and sadly walking out of our lives, with a very nice and strong closing episode with a wink on Bulman's sweatshirt at the last scene: "Danger: H.M. Government can seriously damage your health insurance".

Armed with any combination of plastic shopping bag, gloves, quotes, scarf, poetry, inhaler, wit and WILL POWER T-shirt - retired DCI George K. Bulman (the superb and greatly missed Don Henderson) is back, This time as a private detective when not repairing clocks.

I'm usually not in the habit of granting 5-star reviews to DVD box sets that contain no subtitles and no extras, as I feel these should be basic features, However in that case I'll deviate from this practice, as I simply can't let anything interfere with the 5 star rating this masterpiece deserves.

Together with Lucy McGinty (great Siobhan Redmond) this duo shines with their chemistry over the whole series.

I've seen Bulman only once during the 80's, and yet it used to resonate in my head for all these years, and I always wished I would one day be able to watch it again. I'm therefore grateful to Network for releasing it on DVD after all these years. I'm sure their profit from this release is marginal at best, and I can understand their reluctance to invest in this product anything more than in the actual transfer.

Regarding the transfer - I find it fairly good.

These seven episodes basically show exhaustion of the Bulman concept, with a descent into incomprehensible and implausible plots which don't really develop logically. Only episode 4 of the seven is really up to the standards of the previous set. as before the characterisations, acting, eccentricities and humour are still good, but unable to conquer stupid storylines. The climactic final episode to close the Bulman sagas is just silly beyond belief.

So don't start here if you're a Bulman newcomer - only venture in if you're a committed fan.

All but the final series of Bulman are thoroughly entertaining without having to rely on gratuitous sex, violence, special effects, dysfunctional camera shots or over production. Plausibility stretched too far by the final series however and a far cry from the original down-at-heel character spawned by the XYY man. Nevertheless good value for money and a worthy addition to most DVD collections.

A bit of a let down after a terrific first series. This is, of course, relative. Perhaps we should have left it with just one series. Still better than most of the dross of the era, though.

Not bad, but not as good as I remembered. The plots range from the really good,to the downright stupid and one or two are totally incomprehensible.
