Product Description

Product managers plan out what to build, help build it, then check that it worked. This book goes step by step through the planning and development process for software products - keeping it short and simple. There's no padding, and no BS.

Drawing on his experience as a product manager in a leading Silicon Valley startup, Shahid demonstrates how creating a great technology product can draw on real world experiences including crazy golf and the In 'n' Out burger menu.

Shahid Hussain holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern, and an MEng from Pembroke College, Oxford.

How to create a good product: case in point 22 July 2011

This book hits the nail on the head - clearly the author knows how to design a product with the user in mind. When he says no BS he means no BS: the book dives straight into the topic without lengthy introductions and covers all the essentials to convey what it takes to turn and idea into a product and the critical role that you, the product manager, play in the success of the process. It does so speaking to common mortals, without assuming previous technical expertise and all the while demystifying the most frequently heard jargon with wit and a very readable style.

Even more important to me is that he manages to guide you through the process in a short 2 hour read by making sure each word serves a purpose, so that you don't feel like you have to set time aside to devote your near future to a 20 pound tome (and your wallet to a matching price tag). How you DO feel at the end of the book is as if you just had the greatest conversation ever with an excellent product manager explaining what his job is all about in layman terms (read it with a pint of beer at hand and the portrait will really come to life).

If you are an average Joe (or Jane) and think you have a great idea for a product, but you feel like you could use some focus and orientation, do yourself a favor and read this book first: it will make you want to start building something right away.
Succinctly written AND packs a lot or punch - worth your time! 11 May 2012

Having interned as a high tech product manager between my first and second years of business school, reading this book was like a synthesis of all my learnings over my entire internship, condensed down to a VERY succinct, no-BS, quick read - with the invaluable addition of years of Shahid's experience and his powerfully structured way of delivering a message that other business writers tend to package in bloated 800-page tomes.

The book lays out, in a jargon-free, almost bullet point way, exactly what product management is, what product managers do, and as a product manager, what one needs to do and think about in order to deliver a successful product, and thus be a successful product manager.

I would strongly recommend this book as survival kit for anyone considering product management, those already in the field, or even those just wanting to learn more about product management - whether you already know a lot or starting from zero, there is simply no better bang for your time AND buck.
