5.0 out of 5 stars a comic masterpiece 11 Mar 2012
By schumann_bg TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Ralf Konig is a brilliant comic artist and this book is funny, outrageous, and very sexy. It was the first book of his I ever read and is an absolute classic. All his books deserve to be translated but in the English-speaking world no publisher seems to have taken them up (unlike in France where they are all available). At least this one is out there - and possibly a couple of others - and it really is one of the best, even allowing for the print quality. This is not perfect, as another reviewer has said, but nonetheless allows you to enjoy the book pretty much unimpeded. I remember when I first bought this at Gay's The Word about 10 or 15 years ago I could hardly believe my eyes - it was so much what I had always hoped to find! It couldn't be filmed and it wouldn't be the same in prose - basically it is a comic through and through, and really exploits the potential of the genre for narrative, humour and visual cheap thrills!

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad printing quality 14 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
I know this book in its German version since many years and think it is great fun - one of Ralf Koenig's masterpieces! However, I have just received a copy of the english version (Bull's Balls) and am very disappointed with the bad printing quality. The pictures have lost a great deal of the characters' expression through the bad print and it's rather unpleasant to look at. What a pity to loose the quality of a great book through such a minor detail as resolution!

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute MUST read 1 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
My German buddy sent me this as a birthday present and it's got to be one of the best reads for gay men on the planet! Hysterically funny, superbly translated into English and very very sexy. I'm trying to read them all now cos apparently there are lots more! I read somewhere too that films have been made out of his books. Get this book - u won't be disappointed.

I gave this book to a gay friend as a present and he said he has spent many enjoyable moments with the book...!
What I especially appreciate is that the English translation is very good. Classic Ralf Konig! Very funny!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gay Double Ten Year Itch 14 July 2000
By John Alexander - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Unknown Binding
This is a full-length black & white graphic novel with strong adult gay content. I found it to be outrageously funny, sad, real and poignant. It chronicles a German gay couple that has been together for ten years, as both of them get the itch for something different. One for his piano student, who, as fate would have it, happens to be coming out at the same time to the surprise of his family & admirer. The other, for a mountain of man, quite bearish, a construction worker from Barcelona who is ostensibly straight, but not narrow. The ending is poetic, and refreshingly real.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 17 Mar 2008
By D. Vu - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I heard of Ralf Konig via the movie 'Killer Condom' and having seem some funny examples of his work online, decided to read 'Bull's Balls' - a choice I'm ashamed to admit, made mainly through my appreciation of the front cover. Perhaps I shouldn't be so surprised then with my disappointment at what I saw as a simplistic, predictable and incomplete work.

However, I'm willing to give Konig the benefit of the doubt. As a previous reviewer has said, a lot of humour and energy was probably lost in the translation. The parts where the characters didn't talk were certainly more enjoyable than the long and tedious sections of dialogue that dominate this comic.

After a while though, I think even the style of illustration also began to annoy me. Konig's contemptible depiction of women especially grated with me - and that's considering that I'm a man.

Anyway, if you can chase down a copy of this comic without buying it, I'd advise you to do that. It's mildly titillating, but not really worth buying if you can't appreciate the original German version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rallf Konig ist ein groBer Geschichtenerzahler 29 Dec 2012
By Billy N - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Bull's Balls by Ralf Konig is a just a small part of the on going saga that is Konrad und Paul. I enjoyed this book even though it is set in the early 1990's when it was first written. Ralf Konig's grasp of the Leather community is extensive and I like the way that he weaves it into the story line. When I got this book I read it in one stting since I found it compelling. I like the characters and style, It's too bad that more of Konrad und Paul ist nicht im English. I feel like we're missing out in the US. However, Bull's Balls is still a timeless and gripping story especially since even though things change they still feel the same.
Danke,
Herr Billy

3.0 out of 5 stars loss in translation? 31 Dec 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Unknown Binding
Ralf Keonig is one of the most popular cartoonists in Germany and his books in German are quite popular amongst both gay and straight populations. This book has now been translated into English. Although the translation is good, I found the story not nearly as compelling as my German friend counterparts. It is a fun read, however, and perhaps it is simply that some of the humor is lost in the translation.
