At last we have a CD which includes the music that was left off of the original soundtrack. What is also good about this CD is that it actrually has the version of the main Bullit theme that starts the film. As the original soundtrack was a re-recording of the music from the film, some bits were changed slightly to make it more popular for a mainstream audience, but this CD includes the original versions. If you liked the music from the film, you'll love this CD, and even if you have the original soundtrack you may still want this. The CD contains 18 tracks ... which include both the record versions and film versions of three cues, and three additional ones not released before. Although it's not the original music, but a more recent re-recording, it still has all the character of the music from the film, and it should do, as it is conducted by the man himself, Lalo Schiffrin. A must for fans of the film.

**Amazon have cross-posted this review. Just to clarify, this is a review of the 2009 Film Score Monthly CD release**

This is a much welcomed and long overdue debut release of the original soundtrack to Bullitt as heard in the film. The history of this soundtrack is complicated - the original soundtrack heard in the film was never released. Instead shortly after recording it, Schifrin returned to the studio and re-recorded it, giving it a more commercial vibe in the process and this was to be the original 1968 album release. He subsequently re-recorded it again in 2000 with the WDR Cologne Big Band and again, this was released. To further complicate matters, versions of the original 1968 album were released in France and Japan in the early 90's with added sound effects. Now, this fine release by the ever impressive Film Score Monthly label presents Schifrin's original 1968 re-recording and the never before released film soundtrack of the music that actually features in the film.

Both versions here, much like the film itself, epitomise 60's cool. Moody and brooding in parts, jazzy and funky in others, Schifrin delivers a master class in soundtrack composition - driving bass lines, flute interludes, rhythm guitars, orchestral and horn arrangements - they're all here and much more besides. Both versions of the main title, with its distinctive funk bass line and cool, collected jazz melody will be familiar to most and, as expected, the re-recorded version (track 1) is more upbeat than the original version (track 13).

Across the two versions here a lot of the passages and cues are almost identical but with different arrangements and some of the less commercial tracks were not re-recorded for the original 1968 album release.

Quite simply, there is no cooler driving music than this. Its just a shame that I am driving around Norwich and not San Fransisco!

Listen to this CD and hear Shifrin at his best. And relive the movie in your immagination. The pictures are good, the music is better. A must-buy for Bullitt, Shifrin and movie jazz theme fans. Count me as all three!

Even if this wasn't a marvellous film soundtrack, it would still hold its own as an exceptional jazz album.Schifrin incorporates the big band treatment with wonderful individual solo offerings in what can only be described as a cinematic masterpiece listening experience and I'm digging that crazy flute.

As hoped for/expected, product is as described, very quick delivery and no hassle whatsoever. Lalo Schifrin is way up there with Mancini and Morricone.

Simply brilliant. Even without the connection to a great film this CD would stand alone as a great album. Turn it up and let the music ebb and flow - impossibly cool, sub zero.

There is not mich I can say about the music itsel - Schifrin's soundtrack to "Bullitt" is one of the greatest ever written. The music perfectly fits to this movie centered around the hard-boiled cop Frank Bullitt - played by the "King Of Cool". And the music is just as cool as Mr. Steve McQueen. "Shifting Gears" sets up one of the greatest car chase scenes of all times. Therefore this is sure a great play if you drive a Ford Mustang or Dodge Charger ;)
Some argue that these are not original recordings and don't have the atmosphere of the originals. Well, I've seen the film many times and I couldn't figure out any big difference. These recordings sound just as good as the originals - if not superior. The music was composed by Schifrin himself and the musicians obviously had excellent skills. In my opinion, they did a great job at getting the feeling of the Sixties for this music. A great album, buy it.
