Product Description

Product Description
Inspired by Hemingway's accounts of bullfighting, but aware of the author's romanticization of the subject, this book is an analysis and critique of the origins and myths of the art, and a survey of the literature it has inspired.

4.0 out of 5 stars A contemporary sequel to Hemingway's Death in the Afternoon, 3 Feb 2001
By A Customer
A modern view from a contemporary acclaimed author into the world of 'toreo', the art of bullfighting, and its place in Spain in the 21st century. This book not only tackles the techniques involved, but also justifies its place in European society while not ignoring the obvious aspects and accusations of cruelty. The study looks deeply into the composition of modern Spanish society, and discusses in detail the reason for 'toreo' being considered an art form in its own right, and not purely a spectacle. A fascinating read for all those interested in learning more about this contentious aspect of modern Spanish life and culture, and looking for the reasons behind its continuing popularity in an enlightened age where pressure is being brought to bear on the abolition of similar practices in Western society, as in hunting with hounds in the UK.
