Product Description

A quality install program can improve your company's image and reduce support costs at the same time. This is the first book to show how to create bulletproof installs using InstallShield5, the leading install software for Windows. The book begins by introducing the fundamental issues associated with install programs, including defining your goals, understanding your operating system environment, and writing a specification. Next, it introduces you to InstallShield5, including the InstallShield IDE, the InstallScript scripting language, and in-depth coverage of the InstallScript API. Understand how to use InstallScript to work with configuration files, shared files, locked files, and the Registry. Walk through the construction of a custom user interface; handling events during install; creating both standard and custom install programs; working with AutoRun .INF files, ensuring Microsoft logo compliance, localizing for global markets; and more.

Totally Excellent! 23 Mar 1999

I'd been making our company's install programs for quite some time when I stumbled upon this book - and I must say my life would have been a lot easier if I had known about it months before.

I happen to think that the Installshield web site and help files are quite good, if you have a good idea of exactly what you are looking for. When you're not sure however it can be difficult to find the right information.

This is one of the areas where the book is great - giving overviews, sample code and explanations of why you should do certain things in a certain way.

If you have someone at your place of work just starting off with InstallShield make sure you buy them this book it will save them a whole lot of grief. If you're already familiar with the product then I'd still recommend it as it will probably show you a few things you hadn't thought of.

(Although the book is aimed at InstallShield 5.1, the author is going to release another chapter on the web for version 5.5 When its up you can look at it here

I started to do an Install with Installshield that required many custom dialogs and custom features. I got all my information from newsgroups and installshield documentation. I then ordered this book 2 weeks into my development expecting it to answer some of my more difficult questions. It didn't. But, If you are just starting this book should save you some time understanding everything about a basic setup program.

There is very little in this book that isn't also in the manual or in the on-line help. It never gets very deep. If you try to find information in it the index is of little use as it almost only lists InstallScript commands.
