FIVE TOURS OF DUTY. ONE HEROIC ACT. SECONDS FROM DEATH...

Product Description

AFGHANISTAN, FEBRUARY 2008: in an out-of-control, dangerous country torn apart by war, littered with Taliban guerrilla forces and thousands of miles from home, Lance Corporal Matt Croucher, a Royal Marine with 40 Commando, accidentally activates a grenade whilst on a covert patrol behind enemy lines.

With only a split second to react, Croucher's instincts kick in and he throws himself beside the grenade, reasoning that saving the lives of his three comrades was worth the likelihood of losing his own.

Miraculously, and against all the odds, Croucher survived, and mere hours later was taking part in a gun battle against local insurgent fighters, demonstrating a raw, unique courage and devotion to military duty that would later see him awarded the George Cross - a distinction bestowed only on those who perform acts of the greatest heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger.

Croucher's George Cross would make him famous around the world. But his story is much more than just one heroic act in isolation. His is a life of bullets, blood and loyalty, and of lives saved and lives taken. From a young marine aged 19, when he was one of the first 200 Allied soldiers to invade Iraq back in 2003 as part of an elite force of British Marines and US Special Forces, through to his second tour of duty in 2004, when he suffered a fractured skull following a roadside bomb attack, only to return to action just a week later, and then being thrust into hellish Afghanistan, Croucher has seen vicious fighting, intense gun battles, roadside ambushes, and witnessed the death and injury of close colleagues on an almost daily basis.

This is his incredible story: a searing, vivid, non-stop account of one man's heroism and courage under fire, in the most gruelling combat environment since the Second World War.

Another gripping story from someone who has truely been there and done that, luckily for him he escaped. Bulletproof is a story that many of soldiers and marines have had experiences of, however Matt has put it across his way, the guy on the grounds way.

Gripping stuff from start to finish, good to see that not all authors are portraying themselves as white as snow.

Great book

Absolutely gripping 15 Dec 2009
Format:Hardcover
This book keeps you gripped for page one.
It's written in a way that you can relate to Matthew, he is just a normal guy fighting for his country.
But then you read on and realise how he's put his life on the line on several occasions where others would have ran away.
This guy really does have nine lives.
It's great the way he doesn't try and explain the politics around this war, he's simply telling his story, how he and many other soldiers on the front line see it.
This book shows you what heros are all about and he really deserves the George Cross medal for what he did.
Would definately recommend it for any Christmas present, I'm not normally into war / soldier type books but have thoroughly enjoyed this one. Hopefully he'll bring out another one.

Heroes 5 Oct 2009
By Ally
Format:Hardcover
Matt Croucher is a hero and you only have to read what he did to get his George Cross to know that. He and people like him risk their lives for the sake of us back here and we should be proud of them. The book is brilliant - it shows you what it's like to be on the front line of the wars we are currently fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. This book isn't about the rights and wrongs of those campaigns or overall strategies etc, it's about what's happening on the ground and what our brave soldiers like Matt and his fellow Marines do every day out there. Some of the stories are breathtaking and it's incredible that Matt survived. I for one am glad these stories are being told and am proud to have these guys fighting for my country.

Brave but difficult to warm to
Interesting book, but not as much as other reviews led me to believe. Whilst the author was undoubtably brave, I found him difficult to warm to. Read more

I found this to be a very engaging book - whether you agree with our policy in Afghanistan or not, you have to respect our people who are sent out there to implement it. Read more
