Mr DIXON tells it all.
That wonderful GAUMONT BRITISH film, shot at Shepherd's Bush studio, produced by MICHAEL BALCON, was released in Britain in May 1935, in the full 73 minutes version. It was released in the US, in July 1935, under the title of ALIAS BULLDOG DRUMMOND and cut (!!) to 63 minutes to keep the
mystery story free from comedy!
It was later restored to its full length and original title.
ALFRED JUNGE, who had a brilliant career as an art director, including
big US productions shot in Britain, worked on that one.
Thanks to the British Council, I saw a 35 mm print
The usual small hard core of movie buffs, mainly geared to US movies, sat in the Cinémathèque and was quite enthusiast. If WALTER FORDE had been present, we would have showered him (plus the cast and the crew) with
bérets and baguettes.
Our American friends love quaint Old England. They should make a good transfer, later sold in Europe.
