Product Description

Product Description

'Demobilised officer, finding peace incredibly tedious would welcome diversion. Legitimate if possible; but crime, of a comparatively humorous description, no objection. Excitement essential.' Bulldog Drummond was the original daredevil adventurer who, with his various friends, made it their mission to fight all enemies of Britain in the uncertain years following the First World War. Fearless, resourceful and debonair, Drummond could easily have been the father of James Bond. In the first four novels of the series, Bulldog Drummond, The Black Gang, The Third Round, The Final Count, all of which are contained with in this volume, Hugh Drummond finds himself pitting his wits again Carl Peterson, a criminal genius with an insatiable passion for power and world domination. He has the great facility of disguise and his chameleon appearances are one of the joys of these thrilling tales. Peterson s constant companion is the sinister but beautiful Irma. The Drummond books are exciting page-turning adventures for grown up boys and girls.

Four books in one! 1 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
I just wanted to clarify that there seem to be some mistakes in the listing for this book. The other current review from Mr Guy Wrench seems to apply to a different product. This title does indeed, as per Amazon's description, include the first four books in the Bulldog Drummond series, which are -

Bulldog Drummond,
The Black Gang,
The Third Round and
The Final Count.

All are included here. And if the page count given makes that seem unlikely, well, that's because its wrong! There are actually 768 pages. Which makes this fantastic value for lovers of old style "boy's own" adventure stories. At least for grown up boys I should perhaps say, as they are surprisingly violent, and also there is an unfortunate touch of racism and particularly anti-semitism, but if the reader can take them in the time and context that they were written, then these are good old fashioned adventure stories; not deep, but fun, and pretty well written. Also, fans of such characters as The Saint and James Bond would be well advised to check these out.

For those who care about such things, the first three novels are told in the third person, while The Final Count is a first person account by a new character. A seven page introduction by author in his own right David Stuart Davies is included.

Wordsworth Editions do a fine line in reprints of stories and novels from earlier times.

By Officer Dibble VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Ex-boxer and war hero, Drummond 'bellows like a bull and charges head down' into a whole raft of derring-do and wild adventures. Finding ordinary life dull after the thrill of the kill in No Man's Land, he advertises in the Press for 'excitement'. Via Phylis his fiancee, and using some of the better sort of 'chaps' from the old Brigade, Drummond enters into a four book long showdown with cunning, super villain Carl Peterson.

Peterson fights dirty with a range of dastardly weapons as Drummond relies on a water pistol and stiff upper lip. The adventures all crack along from one set-piece to another with an odd pause for a fag, 'Turkish that side, Virginia the other'.

Sapper inserts lengthy political outbursts into these yarns. Be under no illusions the books are xenophobic, anti-semitic, anti-union with Drummond portrayed as the bluff, honest jingoistic patriot. It is a Daily Mail reader's bible.

These novels represent excellent value at this omnibus price.

I first read this when I was a boy. I've come back to it again and was not disappointed. I'm fascinated by the era in which the story was set and although the story is a serious one, Bulldog Drummond provides many moments where it's impossible not to smile or laugh. Were I a reviewer in those times I'd say it was a ripping good yarn.
