Product Description

Aaron T Beck, M.D. University Professor of Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania

Bulimia nervosa is a very distressing and common disorder for which effective treatment is quite limited. Fortunately, this new volume by clinical experts at the cutting-edge of the new treatment for this disorder provides a solution. This volume presents a detailed program by which individuals with bulimia nervosa can help themselves. It is highly readable and enriched with a number of relevant clinical examples. I highly recommend this volume.

Product Description

This manual is written for professionals working with people suffering with bulimia nervosa and for sufferers themselves. It provides a framework for understanding what maintains the disorder and why it has developed. In addition, there is a step-by-step programme to aid recovery. The authors draw on developments in cognitive theory and on innovation and cognitive th erapy treatment strategies. They focus on the link between thinking and behaviour, and give guidance on learning how to identify and change negative thoughts, underlying assumptions and core self beliefs. Factual information is presented alongside a programme of work sheets, self-assessment questionnaries and case examples from the authors' professional experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!!, 22 July 2008

This review is from: Bulimia Nervosa: A Cognitive Therapy Programme for Clients: A Cognitive Manual (Paperback)
I have suffered with bulimia nervosa all my life and had given up hope of recovering after having lots of help from the NHS over the years. My GP recommended that I buy this book and although initially sceptical I'm glad that I did. It has transformed my life and I am well on the road to recovery , which I never thought would be possible.

Following a brief introduction you are asked to consider the advantages, disadvantages and fears of changing. Then you are introduced to a more psychological way of understanding binge eating rather than the eat 3 meals a day advice. You are asked to identify different types of thoughts and beliefs that contribute to keeping the problem of binge eating going. I really liked the idea of " permissive thoughts" and realised just how many times i said to myself - that piece of cake has my name on it, it's calling out to me, knowing full well that bingeing would follow. The book goes on to address changing problem behaviours and looking at underlying beliefs. Finally you are asked to write a relapse plan.

The book was clearly writen and easy to follow interspersed with case studies that illustrated the problem and techniques. I would strongly recommend this book". For me it was life changeing.

This review is from: Bulimia Nervosa: A Cognitive Therapy Programme for Clients: A Cognitive Manual (Paperback)
A very well written and extremely accessible book. As a bulimia sufferer for over 15 years I have read many books on this topic but feel that this is the best one. It's easy to read and the exercises it has are thought provocking. The case studies are relevant and it makes me feel that at last there are people who understand. For the first time in years I feel positive about making a full recovery and getting my problem under control. I am using the book with the help of a therapist but I am sure that you could use it on your own if you were determined enough. Highly recommended and well worth the price.
