Surprisingly, this guidebook is not up to the Lonely Planet's usual standards, with much of the information out-of-date or just plain wrong. The maps, also, are somewhat confusing and the local tourist guides were far more useful for navigating around cities. Having said that, I'm sure Lonely Planet do not intend for their guidebooks to be used as accurate city maps - the books cover too much ground.
Bulgaria changes fast: every city we visited had probably over 100 hotels or hostels, while the guidebook only lists a few in each price range. It was the same for restaurants. In general, this was a useful guide but I'd recommend supplementing it with online information about whichever city/cities in Bulgaria you plan to visit.

if you know the Lonely Planet series this will not surprise you too much. Clearly the result of compiling input from many different travellers (some of whom we suspect never leave the safety and comfort of western cities too often). If you take the remarks and comments with a very large pinch of salt there is some very good information here. However there are some major gaps - seems the reviewers didn't cover the whole country, but still a good source if you are planning to visit most key areas

The guide needs updating (it's from 2008) but is still very high quality and practical. Lonely planet's format is geared towards practical problem-solving and is easy to use. I also appreciated the Cyrillic alphabet pages towards the back.
