Product Description

Bukowski in Pictures is the first pictorial biography of Charles Bukowski, legendary author of classic books such as Post Office, Ham on Rye and Notes of a Dirty Old Man, and the subject of the Hollywood movie Barfly. Bukowski's picaresque life - as driven writer, heavy drinker, Hollywood celebrity, family man and unlikely Don Juan - is illustrated with approximately two hundred photographs, many of which are published here for the first time. Friends, family and lovers have contributed candid photographs, and there are powerful new portraits by leading photographers. Extracts from personal letters and rare documents offer new insights that delve behind the public persona. The end result is a fascinating life in pictures that is essential for all Bukowski fans.

From the Back Cover

Charles Bukowski is a legend in modern literature. A heavy-drinking postal clerk from Los Angeles, California, he rose from obscurity to international acclaim as the author of more than forty-five books of poetry and prose that document, with unerring honesty and wit, the underbelly of America. Post Office, Notes of a Dirty Old Man and Ham on Rye are among his most famous works. He also wrote the screenplay for Barfly, a movie based on his life.

It was a picaresque life that began in Germany in 1920, and ended in Calfornia in 1994. His childhood was desperately unhappy. As a young man he lived as an itinerant drunk, and he worked manual jobs until becoming a full-time writer at the age of forty-nine. In his remaining years, Bukowski emerged as one of the most successful and innovative writers of his day.

Bukowski in Pictures is the first pictorial biography of Bukowski, telling the story of his life with approximately two hundred photographs, both colour and black and white, most of which are published here for the first time. Friends of Bukowski, members of his family, and former lovers have contributed candid photographs. There are powerful new portraits by leading photographers such as Gottfried Helnwein, former Rolling Stone art director Tony Lane, and Andy Warhol's former assistant, Gerard Malanga. Artists Dave Greiser and R.Crumb have provided illustrations. Extracts from personal letters and rare documents, including Bukowski's recently declassified FBI file, offer new insights that delve behind the public personae.

Biographer Howard Sounes - author of Charles Bukowski: Locked In The Arms of a Crazy Life - has edited and introduced Bukowski in Pictures, weaving new research and quotations from Bukowski's work into introductory essays and extensive photo captions. The resulting book is an extraordinary visual document that will fascinate and delight Bukowski fans the world over. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fitting companion to the Sounes biography of Bukowski., 2 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Howard Sounes has done an excellent job in tracking down the people who knew Bukowski at diffrent stages of his life and obtaining these great period photo's. infact Sounes does some snapping himself going back to old haunts such as the bars and hotels where Bukowski used to flop and taking the pictures of the places as they stand now. Bukowski in pictures is a fitting companion to the written Biography of Bukowski that Sounes wrote a few years back and along with other recent books coming out such as the Beginners guide to Bukowski, Bukowski Unleashed! and the Pivano book of interviews, this book will go a long way to keeping the memory of the old man alive and keeping his growing legion of fans happy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything You Wanted To See About Buk, 30 Aug 2001

This review is from: Bukowski in Pictures ("Rebel Inc") (Hardcover)
An excellent & well laid-out book displaying the life of Charles Bukowski. The book shows the real people & places depicted in Buk's poems & stories. It even has a photo of his grave which brings it home that such a lively individual is no longer with us even though new books of his unpublished/uncollected poems continue to be published. 4.0 out of 5 stars yes, but....., 7 Mar 2001
By Joel Yeager - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Bukowski in Pictures ("Rebel Inc") (Hardcover)
Have to have it if like Buk, but, there are so many errors in the book, missing words etc. that it made me think it was thrown together too quickly on the heals of his last book, Sounes that is, that it sort of makes me think poorly of it. Some of the pic's as well are filler, shots of streets in LA there were like the streets that Buk wandered. Regardless, I had to have it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable for Bukowski readers, 24 Jan 2001
By steve richmond - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Bukowski in Pictures ("Rebel Inc") (Hardcover)
Howard Sounes has created in photographs what he previously created in words, that is a highly entertaining and complete and even more important, truthful and factually correct account of the life and times of Mr Charles Bukowski. BUKOWSKI IN PICTURES begins with photos of the great writer as an infant, and ends with photos of his tombstone ("Don't Try" being etched into same) and very peaceful final resting place.

Between the birth and death pictures are about 200 pages of around one thousand wonderful color and black & white pictures of Bukowski at every facet of his life, riding a pony as a kid, with grammar school classmates, with high school classmates, as a tot in his dad's arms, and on and on covering every year of his life right on to the final years as one of our planet's most successful scribes both financially and creatively. His huge lifetime body of published works remains unmatched, and when joined with his thousands of paintings, drawings, puts him in the same world class of mega-artists such as William Blake, Dostoevsky, Shakespeare, and the hundred or so other artist-giants of the human experience and experiment on Earth.

Howard Sounes is up to the challenge. Sounes doesn't back down from describing the complete Bukowski, including those well documented horrible sides of Bukowski's character, which Sounes is able to fully analyze and comment upon in various captions to photos and the inclusion of consise paragraphs which this reviewer finds make this volume excel even more so.

This is a very strong book worth twice as much at the bookstores than is being asked, in my opinion. A Bukowski fan can "read" through this volume with even more enjoyment than those more wordy biographies of Bukowski provide. All the cast of friends, legions of girlfriends, and wives and publishers of Bukowski works, literary peers and allies and even some literary enemies, are herein officially documented in the best photographs available.

Luckily permissions to reprint were granted by all involved. History, Earth's most important and vital literary history, is the big winner here.
