I'd recommend 'Born Into This' to anyone who's even vaguely interested in Bukowski as it mixes archive interviews, readings and documentary clips with the man himself, along with present day snippets of publishers, poets, friends, actors and musicians and I think Dullaghan gets the balance just right as there's nothing worse than a documantary about someone who barely appears between the opinions of the celebrity contributors.
One of the other reviews here claims it's a little too pro-Bukowski and sycophantic but who wants to watch a film about someone they like getting hung out to dry and while it's not the celluloid equivalent of Albert Goldman, it doesn't shy away from Bukowski's darker side.
What the film does capture is Bukowski's wit, charm (albeit slightly sozzled most of the time) and that glint in his eye which only drops fleetingly when interviewers ask ridiculous questions or when he's having women trouble.
Basically, if you like Bukowski, you should enjoy this film and if you don't like Bukowski, why the hell are you still reading this?
