The real key to always looking stylish is having just the right mix of coats and jackets. Wendy Mullin of Built by Wendy shows even new sewers that these multifunctional wardrobe pieces are not as daunting to make as they might seem. Stylish women know that coats and jackets can really pull an outfit together. They are some of the most important and lasting garments in a wardrobe. T-shirts and skirts come and go, but jackets and coats can be worn for years. Yet even for advanced sewers, they seem too intimidating to tackle at home. With her trademark wit and expertise, Wendy puts those fears to rest. In Built by Wendy Coats and Jackets, she offers the guidance and know-how needed to give any sewer the confidence to create 25 different outerwear options using the three enclosed patterns. She offers the tips and shortcuts that she has learned over the years, from choosing the right needles for various coat fabrics to the easiest way to sew a lining. From a faux-fur bolero jacket to throw-over jeans to a Chanel-like dinner jacket in boucle, the creative projects and styling suggestions will have fashionistas rushing to their sewing machines.

Warning - these patterns are tiny. The loosest pattern, the outerwear coat, has 2 inches of ease, which would be close fitting even in a blouse. The Vogue Patterns ease table gives 5 inches as the smallest amount of ease usable with a coat.
The casual jacket only has 1 inch of ease, definitely not the amount of ease needed for the loose jacket styles in the illustrations.
The concept of the book is interesting, all those styles made with minimal pattern adaptations. But start from basic patterns found elsewhere, or you'll get a nasty shock when you try your finished garment on !

3.0 out of 5 starsVideo Review15 Mar 2011

If you make it to the end of this video, then I should give you a "helpful vote" ;)
In a nut shell: 1. I did not sew a project from this book. 2. The book is best suited for intermediate seamstresses. You will need to know seam allowances for cutting out patterns, using linings, fitting, sizing patterns, zippers, buttons etc. 3. The book comes with 3 basic patterns: Fitted Jacket, Basic Jacket & Straight Jacket. From these three patterns the author gives instructions for making 23 additional styles of jackets.
In my opinion, the book is lacking instructions (for my sewing ability) and is not very visually appealing. However, I do like the books spiral binding for easier use.
If you are a fan of the "Built by Wendy" series of books, then you will not be disappointed. But I do feel there are better ways to make a jacket/coat for your wardrobe. I would buy directly from a pattern company or check out the book "Sew Serendipity" by Whitt (starting on page 112).
*I received a copy of "Built by Wendy Coats & Jackets" from the publisher in return for my honest opinion & review.*
XOXO

5.0 out of 5 starsVery Usual Book for Avid Sewers28 Feb 2011

This is the newest book in the VERY USEFUL Built by Wendy series. Wendy teaches you how not only to make the garments pictured in the book but how to adapt, adjust and create your own patterns. This book (and all in her series) will be great for anyone interested in really expanding their skills and getting a better understanding of garment construction. Wendy packs a TON of information into all of her books and it is written very clearly and is easy to understand with very thorough steps. These books are a must have for any dedicated sewists library.

3.0 out of 5 starsThis Book will Make You WORK26 Feb 2011
By Helen Goodwin - Published on Amazon.com

Just received this book in the mail - it does not contain full patterns for all the coats pictured, rather it has just three basic sloper type patterns, with no seam allowances, that she tells you to first copy, adjust, and then add seam allowances to. So if you are hoping to dive in quick - forget it. There is alot of pattern prep work before you even think about cutting out fabric.
This book appears to have lots of great information for someone who wants to invest the time and work of creating custom sewing patterns for themselves, but is not the book for someone looking for a quick, satisfying sewing project.
