Well I have to say I was disappointed to read the poor reviews on this album, because I thought it was absolutely brilliant. In my opinion, the contemporary jazz style of Russ Freeman and the Rippingtons with orchestral tones has evolved to the next level. I have listened over and over to this album and have enjoyed every minute of it and am still enjoying it after 2 months

Where are those Rippingtons back to the first 4-5 cds?. Those were great, built to last. I'm afraid that the direction that Russ Freeman has taken for the last projects is the opposite; they once were fresh, imaginative, exclusive, now they are my Rippingtons no more! By the way, production of this CD is awful, the sound is so bad,...

This will be a brief review - as there is really not that much to say! This is a poor, poor CD. The other reviewers have got it spot on when they talk about a loss of direction for the sound and energy of this once fantastic band. If I think back to the Live in L.A. CD in 1993, yes it looks and sounds a little dated now but boy could those guys get the energy going on stage. Compare this CD to that kind of dynamic musicianship and there is no contest. Russ seems to have now opted for a series of cheesy, organ-inspired keyboard sounds. And they are so detrimental to the overall sound; it's like he's taken your first Casio keyboard out of the cupboard and replaced all the live horns and brass with that sound. This downward trend started most noticeably with the strange choice of keyboard sample and country-sounding guitar interlude in the track "La Calypso" from the previous CD "Cote D'Azur" (which was an only-just-bearable CD)and things have gotten worse since then.

This is self-indulgent, lacking any spice or creativity and I can't imagine really decent musicians such as Dave Karasony and Jeff Kashiwa think this is theirs or the band's finest moment. If I were them, I'd depart this franchise as soon as I could. At one time I didn't enjoy the Spanish-led direction of some Ripps CDs such as "Life in the Tropics", "Let It Ripp" and "Wild Card" - but thanks to this awful CD, I look back on them with fondness. 1 star is generous - avoid at all costs.
