About the Author

Hagen Graf was born in July 1964. Born and raised in Lower Saxony, Germany, his first contact with a computer was in the late seventies with a Radioshack TRS 80. As a salesperson, he organized his customers' data by programming suitable applications. This gave him a big advantage over other salesmen. With the intention of honing his skills, he joined evening courses in programming and became a programmer. Nowadays he works in his wife's consulting company as a trainer, consultant, and programmer ( Hagen Graf has published other books in German, about the Apache web server, about security problems in Windows XP, about Mambo, and about Drupal. Since 2001, he has been engaged in a nonprofit e-learning community called " e.V.", as well as in several national and international projects. All the projects are related to content management, community building, and harnessing the power of social software like wikis and weblogs. He chose Joomla! CMS because of its simplicity and easy-to-use administration. You can access and comment on his blog (

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as it looks! 31 July 2006
By Grahame
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The on-line help for Joomla! is fairly agricultural at this point in time, so I really needed some help, particularly with menus and the like. This book is NOT the answer.

It covers the basics quite well and that's it. It will help you find your way around the Administrator and it explains the "buttons" adequately. Beyond that, there are no useful worked examples, no clever hints and half the book is given over to the esoterics of e-commerce sites etc. Great if you want to run an on-line shop, I'm sure!

If you need a Joomla primer, suggest you look elsewhere.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not great, official documentation is better.. 7 Mar 2006
If you're looking for a quick guide to get off the ground in the murky world of Mambo/Joomla then don't bother with this book.
Beyond a few chapters at the end, the majority of this book is a badly written copy of the official manual and not the grounding I was hoping for.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed 14 Oct 2006
I feel like I wasted my money on this book. It is badly written and it doesn't do anything more than discribing the back-end structure of Joomla!. I was even more dissapointed when I saw that the author went on building a new template by using tables and not divs - this is not a rated book!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Of limited use. 6 Nov 2006
By ds
Disappointed by this book. Lots of screenshots with text explaining fields and buttons - this is of limited value, I needed a "howto". If you want to know howto, don't buy this book, instead use the Visual Tutorials on the Joomla site and then the Joomla User Manual. The Visual stuff is excellent and free!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good reference, but not the definative guide. 3 Feb 2007
By theCapt
This book is a great reference for maintaining Joomla sites, alot of screenshots and breif explainations of what to do/ is happening. Great if you want to quickly refer to if you want to verify what you are about to do. Not a definative guide about how to build and fully maintain a Joomla based site. Offical documentation is very similar and is free but this is quicker to flick through for quicker search.

Good solid reference book, but that is all it is, a reference book. A little out of date with current Joomla technology but still very relevent and the difference is very minor.
