Product Description

Product Description

A walking bass line is the most common approach to jazz bass playing, but it is also used in rock music, blues, rockabilly, R&B, gospel, Latin, country and many other types of music. The term ÕwalkingÕ is used to describe the moving feeling that quarter notes create in the bass part. The specific goal of this book is to familiarize players with the techniques used to build walking bass lines and to make them aware of how the process works. Through the use of 90-minutesÕ worth of recorded rhythm tracks, players will have the opportunity to put the new learning directly into action. This book literally gives bassists the tools they need to build their own walking bass lines.

A book that every novice bass player must have in order to learn the basics of walking bass, which is a very important technique even for the beginners. Ed Freidland starts with very explanatory steps and gives you the possibilities of improvise too. Easy to follow and improves your reading capabilities even if they used to reach low levels and your fretboard knowledge. The CD contains a lot of examples and play-along exercises plus some bonus material. You can find out more from Freidland from his "Bass Player" articles and from his publications as BASS IMPROVISATION, JAZZ BASS, and REGGAE BASS etc. A "sequel" of Building Walking Bass Lines exists too, but I didn't get it yet, named EXPANDING WALKING BASS LINES.

This is an outstading book by Ed Friedland.

+ The fact that it only features common music notation without tablature is a very nice feature to start with.
+ The book builds from simple 12 bars blues to advanced Rythm Changes jazz patterns.
+ The musical ideas provided by in musical notation are interesting and beautiful
+ A ten-pieces annex with jazz standards for us to practice with tops this excellent book.

So this is one of my favourite bass books, the other one being The Latin Bass Book by Oscar Stagnaro, featuring the same excellent teaching style of Mr. Friedland (also present in Mr. Leavitt's texts).

A++ item.

Walking the Bass 5 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
I play bass and wanted a guide as to how to make up walking bass lines. This book is about making the bass player a jazz bassist. The book makes no assumptions about the starting level and begins at the start. It then progresses via stages to introduce more and more complex walking bass lines. This is really helpful as it shows how to "build the walk" from very basic (if you pardon the pun) to the most complex walks.

I should point out that this guide is primarily aimed at jazz style bass lines (which includes the blues, etc.) but these walking lines are adaptable to other genres. Ther are also a few very useful hints about playing, etc.

A useful aid is the CD which comes with the book. You can use it to hear the bass lines. I read music but the primary idea is to get the bassist to be able to build a line from the chords alone. So there are exercises to develop this.

Overall, if you want to get a good introduction to walking bass, this is a good guide. In particular, I did appreciate the step-by-step approach used by the author. It will not, of course, help you develop other styles directly, but will widen your bass horizons from simply playing the root note (base of the chord) repeatedly.
