Product Description

For starters and perhaps surprisingly considering its title, this book offers a wealth of practical knowledge that goes well beyond hollow-state applications as many topics are just as relevant in the successful inplementation of solid-state designs...The sheer quantity of practical, tried and true information is most impressive and clearly indicates that many individuals and organizations contributed by sharing the hard-earned skills and expertise. The over 200 high quality illustrations also help to reinforce the points made in the well-written text...I was particularly impressed with the chapter on choosing new and used test equipment. The discussion regarding the advantages and disadvantages of analog and digital meters and scopes is exceptionally well done. The information is presented with a minimum of math yet is well supported by excellent examples and illustrations that clearly bring home the salient points. The reader is truly receiving a concentrated practical course in instrumentation...If you actually intend to create, modify, restore or repair tube audio equipment, I would highly recommend purchasing Building Valve Amplifiers even if you are seasoned by many years of practical experience. I am convinced that all readers will be amazed at the quantity of new useful knowledge it contains. - James H. Hayward to appear in Andrew Marshall's Audio Ideas Guide Magazine

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical and very readable 12 Sep 2009
By Priesty
"Building Valve Amplifiers" is a very useful book to any DIY audio enthusiast looking at scratch building a Valve Amplifier. The book covers constructional issues such as chassis manufacture, wiring and testing/faultfinding. The author Morgan Jones assumes no previous knowledge of any of the subjects covered and because of his easy to read style of writing, the subject matter should be accesable to all readers.

Owning the partner book "Valve Amplifiers" is a must, but this book can stand alone from that volume, as the subject of this is less about the circuit design and more about practical considerations such as component layout, earthing and cooling.

3.0 out of 5 stars Building Valve Amplifiers 5 Sep 2009
This is one of the few books available on building valve amplifiers. It contains interesting and useful information, especially for beginners. However, the book has inconsistencies regarding the way it is structured. The book does not satisfy fully neither beginners nor more advanced readers. For example the section on testing is excessive and difficult to follow for a novice valve amplifier builder. More advanced readers, on the other hand, will find the large section on sawing and drilling boring. The book is an ad hoc collection of technical and practical information on valve amplifiers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A writer to be respected. 31 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
All of Morgan Jones books offer excellent and highly practical hints. All of these are backed by theoretical explanations and a bibliography which is very useful in expanding on this knowledge. This review applies to Valve Amplifiers as well.
