I'm an expact with a 12-year-old who speaks English at native language level but goes to school in another country where English is taught as a second language. I bought this book for her to use at school when the other kids are working on their English as a second language books. Although the teacher does her best to help my daughter, she really needs to work very independently given that the teacher has to focus on the rest of the class which is at a very different level. That means that a textbook needs to really engage her for her to actually get the work done.

I bought several other books but none of them held her interest much. This one really does, and I totally see why. The layout and use of colours and graphics is very appealing. It's very well-organised, with units clearly marked and specific and easy-to-understand learning goals all the way so it's obvious WHY you're doing something. The choices of texts are great - I like the choices of poetry and novels, and my daughter was thrilled to be asked to write a plot summary of a Doctor Who episode. At the end of each of the six units there are two assignments, most of which my daughter can do independently and have her teacher look at (some are group presentations which won't work for her). They all have assessment rubrics which allow her to strive for something even without having classmates doing similar work at the same time.

Add to that: it's the cheapest of the textbooks I've looked at. So my daughter and I are both very happy with it! I would assume it also works well in a normal classroom situation, but obviously haven't tried that.
