A very practical and business like approach. It felt like I had a roadmap to guide me on the path from 20 years in a corporate role to the freedom of a portfolio career. I particularly liked the personal insights of those embarking on similar paths. Part 2 of the book - charting your portfolio, was particularly valuable in helping me understand where I was and what I needed to do next. It also helped my wife understand what I was going through!

We all have a number of roles in life: employee, parent, friend etc. The book can help you make better career choices and have a more rewarding life by changing your mix of roles to suit your unique situation.

I was encouraged by someone I respect to read this book and get in touch with one of its authors, Adrian Bourne. Adrian has a tremendous amount of empathy and wisdom, and a distinguished career in business. Having worked through the book and having met Adrian, I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone thinking of how to make their (working) life more rewarding.

Common sense prevails throughout the book, for instance it gives clear guidance on which lifestage is best to consider a portfolio career. I'm still a few years away from that lifestage, but the book helped me to structure and verbalise several ideas I had about where I want to get to, and how to get there. The book was quite right in its prediction that once you've clarified the journey and the destination, opportunities seem to come your way more often - the benefit of knowing what to look for!

The book charts the advantages of thinking "portfolio" from the age of 40 onwards: how great it would have been in my case to CHOOSE when to leave a particular employer. And, given that no-one has a job for life any more, we all need to be ready for the unexpected. There are some fascinating case-histories, as well as goals to set and exercises to complete.

I could have dealt with redundancy 15 years ago with much more composure if I'd had this book then. It's a lot more sensible -- and constructive -- than the sessions I had with a cv-writing and placement service. I've had a "portfolio career" since then and it took a good decade to be convinced "there are advantages to this". "Building a Portfolio Career" would have helped me prioritise the important stuff in life much earlier, ie making time to learn a new language, to help a charity, to get fit, as well as to earn money.

You need to stay flexible, and this book is helping me now to see I should be looking for new employment possibilities, re-focussing my skills once again.

Building a portfolio career is a must read. The book is more than a read it is a working toolkit to help you, if you wish , to transform from the 'limited' life to the 'unlimited' life. Like all toolkits what you get out is dependent on what you put in. Recognising what is in your tool kit and what may need to be added(training; skills etc), or removed (travelling, early starts, office politics etc), is a necessary gateway to pass through on route to achieving your goal. The recommended excercises take time to work through and raise lots of questions in the process. I have taken 3 months working through the exercises, writing lists of skills, ideas, opportunities, being a dreamer, critic and realist along the way. Finally after taking on board the advice and tayloring it to fit 'me' I have a clearer idea and vision of what I want to do, and why, for the rest of my life. 'Building a protfolio career' has helped provide a structure for me to work with and give me confidence that I can persue my dreams after all
