About the Author

David Mercer was born in August 1976 in Harare, Zimbabwe. Having always had a strong interest in science, David came into regular contact with computers at university where he graduated cum laude with majors in applied math and math (although he minored in computer science). As a programmer and professional writer who has been writing both code and books for about nine years, he has worked on a number of well known titles, in various capacities, on a wide variety of topics. His books have sold tens of thousands of copies and have been translated into over 6 different languages to date. David finds that the challenges arising from the dichotomous relationship between the science (and art) of software programming and the art (and science) of writing is what keeps his interest in producing books piqued. He will no doubt continue to write professionally in the future. David balances his time between programming, reviewing, writing, and contributing to interesting web-based projects such as RankTracer and LinkDoozer. When he isn't working (which isn't that often) he enjoys playing guitar (generally on stage and unrehearsed) and getting involved in outdoor activities ranging from touch rugby and golf to water skiing and snowboarding. Visit RankTracer or find him on LinkDoozer where he is generally lurking.

5.0 out of 5 stars From nothing to something! 4 July 2006
Format:Paperback
I recently became aware of osCommerce and the attraction of being able to develop a website with free software. The forum at osCommerce is very good but difficult sometimes to get a straight answer.

Having found this book it answered ALL the questions for me and gave some additional inspiration to develop our project.

Excellent book, well laid out, details given in good old fashioned english without being technical (thank you!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Nearly a Pro myself 6 Feb 2006
Format:Paperback
This book took me right from the basics all the way through to some pretty advanced stuff. It explains everything clearly so that, despite the fact that I have only been working with osCommerce for about 6 months, I could follow everything easily. I still need to learn more about PHP before I would consider myself a pro, but having seen how the author developed planned and installed his own functionality into osCommerce I think I will soon be trying a bit of customization myself.
Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Professional is right! 27 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback
Unlike some other reviewers here I found that this book sets a good balance. If you have a basic understanding of web development techniques, or you have already read the OSCommerce beginners guide and had a chance to get started with using OSCommerce, then this guide is for you. It doesn't get in-dpeth into technicalities of programming and database access, but it does take you in a structured way through the steps you need to work through to get a real-life working web shop to support your business. It is especially good at explaining the setup of some of the key commercial features such as payment processing options and shipping rates. I would recommend this book highly, if you are wanting to build a working web shop without having to go through all the trial and error.
Trust me it is a good investment in time and money.
Here's a quick summary of the contents:
1. Introduction to Ecommerce with oscommerce.
(Resources and commitment, and an outline of steps in designing and building a site).
2. Setting up the development environment.
(Here's where it starts to get techie to help you understand what's under the hood - MySQL, PHP and Apache Server configurations).
3. How Oscommerce works.
(An overview of what the software does and the online resources and support available).
4. Basic Configuration.
(Here's where you start building your shop - piece by piece).
5. Working With Data.
(Excellent tips on structuring your product catlogues and organising all the data that goes with them so that it matches the design of your site and makes things eay for your customers).
6. Customization.
(Changing the look and feel of your shop layout - handling languages and libraries of images).
7. Taxes Payments and shipping.
